NEW RENSSELAER FALLS PLAYGROUND PROJECT STILL IN PROGRESS, MAYOR SAYS—Jeff Dollinger told 99 News after Saturday night's Village Centennial observance over 15-thousand-dollars has been raised so far to start the project. The old playground was town down last September for safety reasons; the Village is still in the process of acquiring land behind Chapin's market to build a new facility. Dollinger told us more funds are needed to make the new playground one the community can be proud of. The Village of Rensselaer Falls was incorporated by a vote of Canton Township residents in October 1912; perhaps the Village is the best known for its connection with the dairy industry. A wooden cheese box factory ran in the community until the 1940's; at one time it cranked out about 150-thousand boxes to preserve dairy products before the days of widespread refrigeration. The Village held a day-long celebration Saturday with a parade and other activities, topped off with the ceremony where past Mayors and graduates of the Rensselaer Falls School were honored. Its last class was graduated 1945. Village Clerk Esther Gushea, still in office was honored for 34 years of service.
