CANTON COUNCIL SHELVES FIVE OUT OF SIX CODE CHANGE PROPOSALS AFTER HEATED PUBLIC COMMENT SESSION--The Town board took almost 2 hours of comments Monday, mostly in opposition to a slate of zoning changes that would more or less provide many more opportunities for commercial and residential uses to expand. Most of the heat came from the agricultural community; saying the changes would destroy property owners' rights to do what they want with their own land, and destroy agribusiness in the town as it is now. The only proposal to be turned into a local law is to change a portion of the Russell Road, or County Route 27 to commercial zoning.
SERIOUS MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT UNDER INVESTIGATION--State Police based in Canton were called to Route 56 North just outside Potsdam Village limits about 6:30 Monday evening. Potsdam Village Police were called to assist. No further details were available.
NORFOLK MAN COMPLIES WITH FRIEND'S REQUEST TO SHOOT HIM, AND GETS FELONY CHARGE--25-year-old Shawn Mossow allegedly fired a 22-caliber round into another man's leg after being asked to shoot him to see what it felt like. The 24-year-old recipient of the gunshot wound is recovering at Fletcher-Allen in Burlington. Mossow was charged with felony, first degree reckless endangerment; arraigned and jailed on 10-thousand-dollars cash bail or 20-thousand-dollars bail bond.
