ACCUSED MASSENA CHECK THIEF, FORGER JAILED—21-year-old Edward Slade of County Route 49 was charged on Saturday by Village Police in Massena with three felony counts of first degree Forgery, and several misdemeanors alleging he swiped three checks from an acquaintance, and cashed them for a total amount of less than one thousand dollars. Slade was arraigned and committed on 1500 dollars cash bail or 3000 dollars bail bond.
POTSDAM TRUSTEES RECEPTIVE OF INFORMATION KIOSK IDEA—SUNY Potsdam Political Science student Sam Mc.Caffrey presented the board last week with his work over this semester about having central posting locations for notices of a non-business, non-political nature. He suggests a first, experimental kiosk at 25 Market Street, a well-lit location that would not have its windows obscured by the kiosk. Mc.Caffrey says the cost could be less than a thousand dollars each, delivered if the board chooses recycled materials. He says having a place to post information about concerts and the like would cut down on littering and clutter through having such posts at inappropriate locations, such as lamp-posts.
WALK-ON, LAST-MINUTE SURPRISE FOR CLARKSON COMMENCEMENT AUDIENCE—US Senator Charles Schumer, expected to arrive much earlier in the program, showed up Saturday just as a jam-packed Cheel Arena finished seeing more than 600 degrees awarded. Schumer said after tearing up a scripted speech “...Have a great life, you graduated from a great school...” More seriously, the University awarded three honorary degrees and, on Friday, saw 17 ROTC Cadets commissioned as officers in the US Army and Air Force. The approximately 2400-dollar Senior Class Gift, mostly from students' own pockets and not from fees will go into the Clarkson Fund to create a pool to assist incoming freshmen, as the "Class of 2012" Scholars.
GUN INCIDENT ON CURTIS ROAD IN RISSELL SENDS 25-YEAR-OLD CURTIS SLIFE TO ST.LAWENCE COUNTY JAIL, HE ALLEGEDLY FIRED A SHOTGUN INTO THE GROUND. HE WAS CHARGED WITH FELONY WEAPON POSSESSION AND SEVERAL OTHER COUNTS.

COLTON MOTORCYCLE CRASH SENT 58-YEAR-OLD DAVID SIMPSON OF MASSENA TO CANTON-POTSDAM HOSPITAL SATURDAY; BIKE STRUCK A CULVERT ON ROUTE 56 AND SIMPSON WAS EJECTED. SIMPSON RELEASED AFTER TREATMENT AND CHARGED WITH DWI.
