COUNTY CONSERVATIVES ENDORSE STATE SUPREME COURT CANDIDATES—The St.Lawrence County Conservative Committee voted Sunday to support Republican incumbent Joseph Sise, Republican John Ellis, Democrat Mark Powers, and Democrat John Silvestri in their bids for the four open seats in the 11-county Fourth Judicial District. Nine candidates were interviewed. Some of the topics the committee grilled candidates on during individual sessions Sunday included the Second Amendment, same-sex marriage, motorized recreation on state-owned land, and other hot-buttons.  The seat held by Canton-based Justice David Demarest is not open this year.

GARNER BLASTS BUDGET, POLICE CUTS—Potsdam Trustee Ruth Garner cast the lone “no” vote Monday on the spending plan for next year. Two crossing guards were cut, and a Police vacancy was not filled. Garner says not filling the vacancy is the wrong move, although Mayor Steve Yurgartis says the cash is in contingency if the board decides to fill it. Garner says the assertion two crossing guards are unnecessary is false, as “these are little children that may run off.” Trustee Eleanor Hopke said ”they're not that little.” The budget has a tax hike of seven-tenths percent, but makes 10-percent water and sewer rate hikes.
