HOTEL ADDED TO POTSDAM VILLAGE COMPREHENSIVE PLAN--The committe working on the document that will replace the 2001 plan added a point Wednesday to draw what planners call a "flag hotel"--meaning a major hotel chain. Planning and Development Director Fred Hanss told the committee the village still loses business to other communities because it does not have a flag hotel; a marketing study done as part of the Local Downtown Waterfront Revitalization process shows the community can easily support 220 units. Previous efforts to draw a major hotel have fallen through, most recently for the former Potsdam Feed and Coal property behind 75 Market Street off the bypass. Families often have to stay as far away as Syracuse for college commencements, major sports weekends, and other large gatherings in Potsdam because of the lack of hotel rooms.
