POTSDAM SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER WANTS RESEARCH ON RESTRUCTURING GRADE LEVELS--Thomas Hobbs, Chair of the Cost Savings Subcommittee of the Potsdam School Board Finance Committee, said Monday he wants staff to provide data on what it might be like to have grades Kindergarten through 6 in one building, and 7-12 in another--in other words, eliminate the separate middle level grouping for grades 5-8. The school district is looking at a projected 1.4 million-dollar deficit for 2012-2013 and across-the-board staffing and program cuts. Hobbs says 7th and 8th grade teachers are certified 7-12, so grouping 7-12 would help ease projected cuts in core subjects especially. Middle School Principal Jamie Cruikshank says the Potsdam middle level program is viewed as a nationwide model, and one of the reasons why the school district excels.
