ONE DRINK IMPAIRS DRIVING MORE THAN YOU THINK--St. Lawrence County STOP-DWI Coordinator Michelle James says every drink raises your blood-alcohol level by .02% on average. She says the 'one drink per hour' rule is not really true in practice; one should wait upwards of an hour and a half to 2 hours before getting behind the wheel after one alcoholic beverage, defined as one, 12-ounce beer, one six-ounce glass of wine, or one 1.5-ounce 'shot' of hard liquor.
AUBERTINE:BUDGET CUTS HAVE MULTIPLIER EFFECT--48th Senate District representative Darrel Aubertine says for every dollar the state cuts in health care spending for example, it also loses a dollar in federal funding.
POTSDAM SCHOOL DISTRICT TO LOSE 479-THOUSAND DOLLARS IN STATE AID CUTS--Board members said last night the loss of state aid while the school district is in contingency means there's no other place to go than staffing and program cuts to make ends meet next year. Union givebacks are also in consideration.
EMPIRE ZONES TO BE ELIMINATED IN LEADERSHIP DEAL--Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos and Governor Paterson have reportedly come to an agreement to shut down the Empire Zones program. The loss of the program would have a major impact on Potsdam, as the zone tax and utility benefits have generated hundreds of jobs.
