POTSDAM TOWN COUNCIL SUPPORTS SENIOR WINTER CHECK-UP PROGRAM--The Council agreed last week to help St. Lawrence County Office For Aging Director Barbara Mc.Burnie with developing a list of names of senior citizens who may need occasional check-ups for their general well-being this winter; out of concern for basic fuel and food needs. The only concern the Council had was for security of personal information; Mc.Burnie says the program is consent-driven so no unnecessary information will be released to anyone. The Town Clerk's office is taking information for Mc.Burnie; the number is 265-3430.
NORFOLK FIRE UNDER INVESTIGATION--Firefighters from Norfolk and surrounding areas battled flames at a vacant structure on Gladding Road almost all morning Sunday; the loss was listed as 'total'. The property is owned by Andrew Zoutar of Massena and is insured.
POTSDAM SCHOOL BOARD CONSIDERING ANIMNAL POLICY--The Board will decide in the near future on a proposed policy controlling dogs and the like on the athletic fields. the policy would allow dogs on the sidelines of all the fields except the new turf area, where they would be forbidden.
FORMER STATE PRISON INMATE PICKED UP ON SEX CRIME WARRANT--Sheriff's deputies went to Gouverneur Correctional facility Friday to arrest 47-year-old Floyd Brewer of North Carolina upon release. Brewer was found to be wanted for an alleged strong-arm rape in Georgia. Brewer was arraigned and jailed without bail pending extradition proceedings.
POLICE CHASE, VANDALISM MEANS JAIL FOR STOCKHOLM MAN--Sheriff's Deputies with the assistance of the US Border Patrol and State Police arrested 36-year-old Stanley Stephenson, Jr. over the weekend following an incident where he allegedly drove away from the scene of a domestic dispute drunk, got out of the vehicle and ran when pulled over, and then allegedly damaged a patrol vehicle in a scuffle with officers. Stephenson was arrested on counts of felony DWI and felony Criminal Mischief, plus many other charges. He was arraigned and jailed on 2-thousand dollars cash bail or 4-thousand dollars bail bond.
MASSENA CAR VANDALISMS, PROPERTY THEFTS BRING TWO TEEN FELONY ARRESTS--Village Police arrested 16-year-old David Hurlbut of Liberty Avenue and a 15-year-old juvenile recently in connection with incidents in the St.Regis Nursing home parking lot. Both teens were charged with felony Criminal Mischief and misdemeanor Petit Larceny counts. The younger teen was petitioned to Family Court; Hurlbut was released on court appearance tickets.
