ADJUSTABLE RATE MORTGAGES MAIN FACTOR IN ECONOMIC MELTDOWN, SUNY CANTON SCHOLAR SAYS--Accounting Professor Dan Fay told an audience at a SUNY Canton panel discussion on the economy Friday potential homeowners were sold mortgages by lenders under the premise that real estate values always go up, never down. They went down for the first time nationally since the Great Depression in 2007, causing payees to have a bigger mortgage than the value of the property.

ASSEMBLY CANDIDATES CAUGHT WITH PANTS DOWN ON SIGN POLICY--118th Assembly District candidates were told in a forum Wednesday Clarkson University policy, as a 501-C-3 non-profit educational corporation does not allow political signs on its property. All three had them up on campus Wednesday. Bob Cantwell says a mistake was made and it won't happen again, Donald Lucas says he thought off-campus rules applied, and Addie Russell says it was her impression it was OK.

ALLEGED VERY DRUNK DRIVER PICKED UP IN POTSDAM--Village Police pulled over 19-year-old Kaitlyn Ripley of Harrisville about 3 this morning, and found her to allegedly have a blood-alcohol content of .23 percent, nearly three times the legal limit. Ripley was released on tickets for Potsdam Village Court.

UNDERAGE DRINKING-FAKE ID CRACKDOWN AT POTSDAM BAR--Police undertook a sweep at Backstreets tavern about 1am Friday, netting eleven arrests in connection with alleged false identification used to enter, possessing alcohol underage with intent to consume, and false personation. All 11 arrestees were released on court appearance tickets.

CANTON NURSING HOME WORKERS NO LONGER UNIONIZED--SEIU Local 1199 Upstate at Canton United Helpers Home voted recently to decertify with the National Labor Relations Board. The union began representing workers at the home in 2002.
