99 NEWS FOR TUESDAY, 2/26/13 STANDING-ROOM-ONLY AS COUNTY COMMITTEE PASSES RESOLUTION OPPOSING “SAFE” ACT—The Finance Committee of the St. Lawrence County Legislature voted Monday to send the full board the resolution opposing the state assault weapon ban and gun control measure—and how it passed as a matter of necessity. It does not contain the word “repeal;” the committee took over an hour of public comments from an over-capacity crowd that more or less demanded it be used. Sponsoring legislator Joseph Lightfoot of Ogdensburg says softer language was a compromise he is willing to make, as he believes a repealer has no chance of passing in Albany. The premise behind not using “repeal” is that legislators feel some provisions of the legislation are good, such as mental health evaluations and safe storage of weapons. ALSO ONLINE TODAY....
