OVER-POLICING ALONG THE BORDER HINDERS TOURISM, PROMOTERS SAY—St. Lawrence County Chamber Of Commerce Executive Director Pat Mc. Keown told Congressional candidate Matt Doheny in Canton Thursday the proliferation of police in the river corridor is a major stumbling block to attracting people for fishing and other tourism-related efforts. Don Meissner of Redwood, spokesman for the chamber's fishing promotion arm, “FISHCAP,” says in his travels around the country taping fishing shows, he has never seen the police there is here. Both do, however, say they appreciate at least some presence of law enforcement. Doheny told the officials he agrees; there is a fine line between enough and too much police.

LENDING POLICY CHANGE STALLS POTSDAM HOTEL PROJECTS—Planning and Development Director Fred Hanss told the Village Planning Board Thursday that Community Bank recently informed developers of proposed hotels in the Village it no longer makes loans for those kinds of projects. Grant applications for both a proposed hotel on the former Potsdam Feed and Coal site and the Potsdam Commerce Park were contingent upon the availability of those funds.

BIG NAME COUNTRY MUSIC NO LONGER AFFORDABLE AT COUNTY FAIR—Don Peck, Director of the Gouverneur-St. Lawrence County Fair running this week, says the famous names like Blake Shelton or Trace Adkins cost up to 175-thousand-dollars to put on a show nowadays, a far cry from what they used to charge a few years ago when they were up-and-coming attractions on the fair circuit as they were making their names. He says the Aaron Kelly show Tuesday night lost money.
