CANTON CENTRAL SCHOOL GETS TWO AID BOOSTS—Superintendent Bill Gregory told reporters last night about 75-thousand-dollars in “bullet aid” secured through the State Senate was recently awarded to the school district, that will help ease some budget cuts made this past season. Also, because the poverty rate in the 2010 US Census data went up from 13 to 23 percent when compared to the 2000 Census, Canton Central will get additional “Title” aid of about 70-thousand-dollars; that will help pay for the addition of three full-time aides to special education students.

COUNTY-WIDE STORM DAMAGE DATA NEEDED—St. Lawrence County Emergency Services Director Joe Gilbert told us yesterday fresh from a meeting with an official from the US Small Business Administration, that because the emergency declaration by Governor Cuomo after the July 17^th thunderstorm is county-wide and not just Potsdam, much more input is needed so the Feds can have workers assess property damage. Anyone with storm damage can contact Emergency Services at 379-2240 to make a report. SBA has been contacted to implement a low-interest loan program to help businesses recover from the devastating storm that did hundreds of thousands of dollars damage.

75 MPH WIND GUST RECORDED JULY 17TH—Certified Military Storm Spotter Rick O'Hanlon took that reading during the major storm that swept through Potsdam. July was the second-warmest on record, with an average temperature of 73.4 degrees—almost 5 degrees above normal. Total rainfall on Sisson Street in July was 2.47 inches....1.73 inches of that coming in that one storm alone.

NINE PEOPLE DISPLACED BY LOUISVILLE FIRE—Flames destroyed the property at 5494 County Route 14, occupied by Joanne Yerdon and eight other people. A photo of the scene also showed a vehicle was destroyed. The cause is still under investigation. The call came in about 4pm; trucks were out about 5 hours. The property is owned by Lloyd Seguin of County 14.
