99 NEWS FOR FRIDAY, 6/29/12

LOCAL CHICKEN IN HIGH DEMAND--Renee Smith, a principal in the North Country Pastured Cooperative based in Dekalb, told North Country Regional Economic Development Council Co-Chairs Tony Collins and Garry Douglas Thursday in a Massena public input session that the mobile slaughterhouse operation funded through a state grant funnelled through the Council last year, is on order and will be up and running this summer. She says customers as far away as Fort Drum are interested in buying the local poultry. Collins and Douglas told Smith Thursday the next step is obtaining a similar processing unit for beef and other four-legged meats. Smith says the co-op is working with United Helpers through its "Sparx" development wing for the establishment of a local "food hub" that would be the distribution point for not just the chicken, but many other local farm products.
