MANY MAPLE PRODICERS IN THE COUNTY HAD THEIR WORST YEAR, EVER--Jeff and Lori Jenness of Dekalb, the owners of the Ore Bed Sugar Shack told the St. Lawrence Leadership Institute class Thursday early spring weather conditions that arrived in March caused their operation and many others to have output about a third of what it normally is....followed by last year's maple season which was one of the best in history. The Jennesses said they have had to purchase darker, more flavorful varieties of syrup from others, so they can produce maple candy and other popular treats. They say the New England market, where some of the top buyers in the world are located is the local producer's saving grace; late-season syrup not fit for pancakes can be sold for other food uses.
