POTSDAM VILLAGE MAYOR APOLOGIZES TO POLICE FOR WORDING OF RESOLUTION--Steve Yurgartis said Monday he did not mean to infer police public relations are poor, to the contrary, when a majority of Trustees voted earlier this month to form a committee charged with looking at police costs and public relations. Police Chief Ed Tischler took the resolution as an insult, calling it a "slap in the face". Trustee Ruth Garner voted no on the resolution, saying it is arrogant of the majority to believe it can tell the police department how to do its job.
POTSDAM MAN JAILED ON FELONY SEX AND WEAPON COUNTS--26-year-old Gregory Brown, Jr. was arrested at his Eevergreen Park, Racquette Road residence by Potsdam Police Thursday afternoon on three counts of Rape in the Third Degree, alleging relations with a girl under age 17 numerous times beginning in August. Brown was found at the time of the arrest to allegedly possess a stolen, 9-millimeter handgun, and charged with felony Fourth Degree Criminal Possession of Stolen Property. Justice Margaret Garner sent Brown to county corrections on 7,000 dollars cash bail or 14,000 dollars bail bond.
SIX FELONY ARRESTS MADE IN GOUVERNEUR DRUG CASE--The multi-agency sweep Thursday resulted in the arrest of 54-year-old Richard Matott, 33-year-old Ryan Redmond, 25-year-old John Murdie, Jr.; 17-year-old Patrick Cyrus, 20-year-old Katelyn Thayer, and 30-year-old Jessica Prashaw. All were arraigned and jailed; Matott on no bail and the rest on 10,000 dollars cash or 20,000 bail bond. The task force made the arrests as the result of undercover buys of heroin, crack, oxycodone, and morphine.
CANTON-POTSDAM HOSPITAL TIGHTENS SECURITY IN RESPONSE TO RECENT MASSENA HOSPITAL SHOOTING-SUICIDE--Emergency Room patients may now only have one visitor at a time, except in certain circumstances at the discretion of physicians and charge nurses; entrances will be limited at night with security staff in the patient registration area.
