SLU "GUM CHEWING" STUDY GETS COVERAGE ON ABC--ABC News ran a piece during the 8am national radio broadcast about the recently-published study by St.Lawrence University Psychology Professor Serge Onyper, that determined students who chewed gum for 5 minutes before taking a test performed better than those that did not. The phenomenon is termed "mastication-induced arousal". This is college fall semester final exam time for much of the nation.
FATAL HUNTING ACCIDENT--RUSSELL--Sheriff's detectives and deputies say 49-year-old Paul Hatch of Hatch Road in Russell took a fatal gunshot wound to the chest fired by 20-year-old Tyler Soper of Edwards, who thought he was shooting a deer they were following off Fordham Hill Road in Russell about 5pm yesterday. The accident is still under investigation.
RICHVILLE MAN JAILED ON FELONY SEX CHARGE--State Police in Gouverneur arrested 29-year-old David Tomlin on a charge of third degree rape Sunday morning, after troopers were called to a domestic dispute. No further details available. Tomlin was arraigned and jailed on $5000 cash bail or $10,000 bail bond
TOTAL-LOSS MOBILE HOME FIRE IN FOWLER--Gouverneur firefighters and mutual aid responded to the residence owned by John Walrath on Gulf Road about 6:20 Sunday morning. A faulty furnace is believed to have caused the blaze. One person was burned while removing items from the burning trailer. The property was not insured.
