POTSDAM SCHOOL BOARD LOOKS AT WAYS TO SAVE MONEY--A cost savings committee made a report to the rest of the board this week. Some of the items the committee is looking at are the possibility of sharing the Buildings and Grounds Superintendent's post with Norwood-Norfolk Central, and finding ways to cut down on fuel costs with the use of monitoring equipment and computer software to gauge usage.
CHARGES FILED IN WESTERN NEW YORK COLLISION FATAL FOR CLARKSON FRESHMAN--The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reports 18-year-old James Spencer of Honeyoe Falls, a first-year Engineering and Management major at Clarkson home for holiday break, perished from injuries received early Wednesday morning when the car he was in as a back-seat passenger crashed into trees off a street in the Town of Mendon. The driver of the vehicle, 18-year-old Garrett Ockun of Honeyoe Falls was charged with vehicular manslaughter and DWI, arraigned and released on his own recognizance. Three other passengers in the car including Ockun were hurt.
POTSDAM STRONG-ARMED ROBBERY RESULTS IN TWO ARRESTS, THIRD ARREST PENDING--Potsdam Police say 24-year-old Ronald Freeman of Massena and 21-year-old Kyle Neuroth of Potsdam allegedly conspired to rob a convenience store customer about 4am November 13th, after the customer was seen with a large amount of cash. The two allegedly worked with a third person; the third suspect jumped the victim in the parking lot and Freeman allegedly took his wallet. Neuroth was a store employee on duty at the time of the incident. Freeman was charged with felony counts of robbery and conspiracy, Neuroth with felony conspiracy. Both were arraigned and jailed on 10-thousand-dollars cash bail or 20-thousand-dollars bail bond.
ACCUSED DRUNKEN DRIVING FELON WITH HISTORY OF SPOUSAL ABUSE CHARGED WITH MAKING UNWANTED PHONE CALLS FROM JAIL--Jonathan Emlaw, 31 most recently of Washington Street in Potsdam but a longtime former Norfolk resident was charged this week with 9 felonies alleging he faked information he was allowed to call a person from the St.Lawrence County Jail, when he in fact was not authorized by law to do so because of a protection order. Emlaw was charged with nine counts of first degree contempt and released back to jail until a Canton Village Court date. Emlaw was arrested earlier this month on a felony DWI charge after a Main Steet, Potsdam vehicle pullover.
THANKSGIVING IN JAIL FOR MASSENA MAN WHO ALLEGEDLY SKIPPED COUNTY COURT--19-year-old Brian Dowman of Parker Ave was picked up at the Police Station yesterday on a county court bench warrant. He was held without bail until arraignment Monday.
