99 NEWS FOR FRIDAY, 9/23/11

COLTON ACTIVIST SAYS NEW RESEARCH ON AKWESASNE PCB'S "STERLING"--Donald Hassig of Cancer Action says a study recently published by a team of SUNY Albany researchers that followed a group of youths on the territory over a 16-year period shows that the toxic compounds that eminated from the now-defunct Massena GM foundry continue to accumulate in the body over time, despite PCB's having been banned from US industry in 1979. Hassig says First Nations people tend to eat off the land, deer and other animals and the fats that go with them, that store the chemicals. He says this is a warning sign for anyone interested in avoiding cancer by limiting their intake of animal fats. Hassig says the research also gives credence to activist Larry Thompson, who tried to bulldoze the capped GM landfill this summer, and still faces criminal charges.
