99 NEWS FOR SATURDAY, 9/17/11 GRIFFO DEFENDS ALLEGATIONS OF HYPOCRISY ON SALES TAX HIKE--47th District State Senator Joe Griffo says he supported a sales tax hike in Oneida County when he was County Executive because the county inherited a 30-million-dollar deficit with no choice but to raise the revenue, while also making drastic cuts, consolidating services and laying people off. He says it was also understood the sales tax would be brought back down once the needed revenue was raised. Griffo stands firm in his refusal to allow St.Lawrence County to raise its sales tax one percentage point; he says the county has not done 'absolutely, positively, beyond a shadow of a doubt' everything it can to trim spending. St.Lawrence County Legislators and Administrator Karen St. Hilaire are furious with Griffo for not supporting home rule legislation allowing the county the option of one more percent. Legislators say they are being penalized for being conservative in the past by not calling for the revenue. Griffo says “I can't speak for the past, all I know is that this is not in line with the Cuomo Administration's call for lower taxes and less government” ALSO ONLINE TODAY....
