COUNTY LEGISLATORS TAKE OVER 2-AND-A-HALF-HOURS OF PUBLIC COMMENT ON TAX CAP ISSUE—The board saw close to 50 speakers taking to the podium yesterday in a public input session about the idea of defeating the state-mandated 2-percent cap in the 2012 budget. County Administrator Karen St.Hilaire says a 9-percent tax hike is forecasted without additional revenue that defeating the cap would provide. A 2-percent scenario would eliminate the Sheriff's Criminal Division, Planning, and several other whole departments. A majority of comments was in favor of defeating the cap; however those comments came from mostly county employees and retirees connected with CSEA and other collective bargaining units. Those against defeating the cap say the county saw the bad fiscal picture coming and should have been prepared. Legislators will vote next month on whether or not to go over the cap; 60 percent of the body or 9 legislators will have to say yes for it to be a go.
