SLU MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY RANKED 3RD IN COJNTY TO START YEAR
The St. Lawrence University men's cross country team will open the 2011 season on September 3rd as the No. 3 team in the country, the highest ranking in program history.

The Saints finished an impressive 2010 season in Waverley, IA last fall by finishing in third place overall at the NCAA Championships. John Johnston and Steve Kiplagat earned All-America honors and return as seniors in 2011, while Seth Jackson was 46th at the NCAA Championships and will serve as a team captain alongside Johnston.

St. Lawrence finished with 258 points in the opening USTFCCCA poll behind only North Central (IL) and Calvin. Haverford and Washington (MO) rounded out the top-5.

The Scarlet and Brown were also tabbed as the team to beat in the Atlantic Region this fall, coming in atop the USTFCCCA Atlantic Region poll. Other Atlantic Region teams who landed in the top-30 in the national poll include Geneseo State (No. 8) and NYU (No. 11).

The Saints will kick-off the 2011 season by hosting over 100 alumni on the Ronald C. Hoffmann Cross Country Course at the annual Alumni Race/Run for Ryan this Saturday, August 27 at 11:00am. The team will then head to Plattsburgh, NY for the Cardinal Classic on September 3rd to open the intercollegiate campaign.

The Kalamazoo Wings, proud member of the ECHL, two-time defending North Division Champions and reigning Eastern Conference Champions and affiliate of the National Hockey League’s New York Islanders and American Hockey League’s Bridgeport Sound Tigers, announce the signing of Potsdam native Joe Charlebois.

A former sixth round (188th overall) selection in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft of the Chicago Blackhawks, Charlebois is participating in his third full season as a professional. Before coming to Kalamazoo last season, Charlebois has played his entire career in the Blackhawks system with either the Rockford IceHogs or the Walleye.

Before turning pro, Charlebois played collegiate hockey at the University of New Hampshire. Charlebois was named Hockey East’s Best Defenseman during the 2007-08 season and had a team best plus-26. The defenseman was also the Wildcats team captain during his senior campaign (2008-09).

SHOEN NAMED HEAD COACH OF WOMEN'S LACROSSE
The SUNY Canton athletic department is pleased to announce the addition of Kelsey Shoen as Head Women’s Lacrosse Coach.

Shoen, a Waddington, N.Y. native is a graduate of SUNY Potsdam, where she obtained a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education and History. As a two-sport athlete for the Bears, Shoen excelled in both basketball and lacrosse. She earned several honors for her efforts as a four-year member of the lacrosse team including Rookie of the Year, a Most Valuable Midfielder award as a sophomore and Coaches Award as a senior. She also served as the assistant to Head Women’s Lacrosse Coach Lauren Bruce at her alma mater for the 2011 season.

Shoen says she has witnessed the impact girls and women’s lacrosse has had on the North Country and "enjoys the intensity and excitement the sport has brought to the area".

In addition to lacrosse Shoen has been the head coach for the Madrid-Waddington AAU basketball team and was an assistant coach with the Yellowjackets girl’s varsity team.

Shoen lives in Potsdam and also works part time with autistic students at Lawrence Avenue Elementary School.

SETON CATHOLIC TO DROP FOOTBALL
Seton Catholic High School reportedly has decided it will not be able to complete its football schedule for the upcoming season.

Their lack of numbers reportedly has made it impossible for them to compete this season.

This situation directly impacts: OFA (Week 5), Canton (Week 3), and St. Lawrence Central (Week 1) from Section 10.
