CANTON MAN CHARGED WITH PERJURY FREE ON BAIL--59-year-old Richard Cassara of Stillman Drive was arrested Saturday afternoon by Canton Police on a warrant from Canton Village Court alleging he gave false testimony under oath, related to a vehicle and traffic charge. He was arraigned on the first degree felony charge before Potsdam Deputy Village Justice Margaret Garner and committed to St.Lawrence County Jail on 5-thousand dollars cash bail or 10-thousand dollars bail bond. Cassara posted bail Sunday and was released until a court date in Canton Tuesday.

TWO GOUVERNEUR TEENS ACCUSED OF STEALING WIRE FROM VACANT HOUSE FOR COPPER--A 17-year-old boy and an 18-year-old boy allegedly entered a vacant dwelling on Spencer Street in the Village last Thursday and took wire from the walls and ceilings, selling the metal for cash. They allegedly entered the building again Friday intending to do the same thing. They allegedly used a home-made torch of cloth on a broom handle so they could see in the basement. The teens were charged with burglary, a felony; and many other misdemeanors to include criminal mischief and petit larceny. Their names were not released as they may be declared youthful offenders.

POTSDAM SCHOOL DISTRICT RESIDENTS TO BE SURVEYED ON WHAT TO CUT AND WHAT TO KEEP IN THE BUDGET--Potsdam Cantral is facing a deficit of about 2 million dollars this budget season, in the wake of state aid cuts and rising costs. Superintendent Pat Brady says staff and program cuts are inevitable; the survey will be an attempt to gauge public sentiment over what budget scenario the voters will accept.
