MAPLE PRODUCERS PREPARING TO TAP, BUT IT'S EARLY--St. Lawrence County Maple Producers Association President Hugh Newton of Hannawa Falls told us this morning the thaw this past weekend helped workers get into the woods, but tapping will not begin in earnest until there is consistent above-freezing temperatures. He says the thaw forecasted later this week will not be long enough for a consistent flow. Tapping too early when the trees are still frozen can split a trunk. He says the season, when it does come looks to be good because of high moisture content from waist-high snow in the back woods. It takes about 40 gallons of sap to make about one gallon of syrup.
