CANTON TRUSTEES APPROVE CODE CHANGES TO COMMERCIAL ZONE, MAKES NICE-N-EASY PROJECT POSSIBLE--The board voted Monday on a negative declaration, or no significant impact under State Environmental Quality Review, and also in favor of the local law revising code allowing 'convenience store with gas pumps' in Commercial-1 zoning with special exception. Standards and definitions were also approved. The changes make a proposed Nice-N-Easy store on the former Main Street Mobil property possible with site plan review, another SEQR, and Trustee scrutiny. Trustee Mary Ann Ashley cast the lone no votes on code changes and revisions, but voted yes on the SEQR. She says she voted no out of respect for the process and the fact the community is divided, however she will stand by the majority decision. Mayor Charlotte Ramsay says the main reason why the majority voted in favor of the code change is the desire for a grocery in downtown, that Canton has not had since 2000 when Jubilee in Midtown Plaza closed.
