RED KETTLE DRIVE MAKES PRE-CHRISTMAS PUSH FOR VOLUNTEERS--Potsdam Salvation Army Red Kettle Coordinator Kate Mikel says the number of volunteer bell-ringers and donations have been outstanding this year when compared to the recent past, however collections are still down by several thousand dollars and the number of needy families continues to rise. Mikel says widespread unemployment and job cutbacks have left many families devastated and unable to meet their basic food, clothing and shelter needs without the assistance Red Kettle-funded programs provide. FORMER CANTON MAYOR MONROE APPOINTED NCPA CHAIRMAN--James Monroe of Colton has been appointed by Governor Paterson to Chair the Board of Commissioners of the North Country Power Authority, the public utility that will serve about 20 communities in St.Lawrence and Franklin Counties with energy apart from National Grid. Potsdam Town Supervisor Marie Regan was appointed to a seat on the board. Monroe, a self-proclaimed 'energy geek' is a retired SUNY Canton physics professor and has been involved with energy issues since the 1960's when solar and wind power first attained nationwide visibility.
