Hart Goal Perserves Tie For Potsdam Versus Canton In Girls Hockey

HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS HOCKEY

CANTON 3, POTSDAM 3 (OT/F)

A Monday Matinee went extra time as the Golden Bears and Sandstoners tie at Pine Street Arena.

Potsdam drew first blood with a redirection in front and Lia Davis knocking it home late in the first period. Just 36 seconds later SUBWAY SUB OF THE GAME Margaret Troiano tie the game at 12:13 of the period.

Canton then took the lead 33 seconds into the second with a MacKenzie Lennox tally before Megan Stevenson scored on a back hand to tie the game at 2-2. The Golden Bears regained the lead with a 4 on 4 goal scored by Troiano with 1:24 to play in the second period.

The third saw Canton look for that all important insurance goal and had a power play but eventually Kady Hart of Potsdam slipped a shot from the point underneath Laurie King for the game tying goal with 2:41 to play.

In overtime, Canton did recieve a power play for the last minute of the game but PEPSI PLAYER OF THE GAME Abby Tardelli stopped several chances and eight overall in overtime. King in a solid effort stopped 22 for the Golden Bears.

SUNY CANTON RETURNING VOLLEYBALL AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY WITH NEW HEAD COACHES
Former Syracuse University assistant volleyball coach Carol LaMarche will be taking over the SUNY Canton volleyball program as the new head coach and Katie Kennedy has been hired as the new women’s cross country head coach.

LaMarche will lead the re-building efforts of the women’s volleyball program which has not had as season the past several years while the college finishes construction of their new $40 million convocation, athletic, and recreation center which is slated for completion in spring of 2011. This fall LaMarche helped guide Syracuse to a 23-9 record, their best campaign since 2005. The former captain of the Orange helped her alma mater make three straight Big East championship appearances during her five years as an assistant coach. As a player, LaMarche totaled 741 kills and 95 blocks and averaged 3.49 kills per game, which ranks third in the school record books. She earned her master’s degree from Syracuse while serving as the graduate assistant and then played professionally in the National French League for one year. Following her stint in France, LaMarche became the head women’s volleyball coach at Clarkson University for one season before moving to Syracuse.

Kennedy has been the assistant men’s and women’s cross country coach at SUNY Canton for the past two seasons alongside her husband, head coach John Kennedy. This fall she helped lead the men’s team to their first Sunrise Conference championship and the women’s team to a second-place finish. Kennedy ran for the women’s cross country and indoor track teams at SUNY Geneseo for four years and earned a bachelor’s degree in Communications. She was part of a 4x800m relay team that still holds the New York State indoor meet record. She was also selected to the SUNYAC all-Academic team. Kennedy received her master’s degree in English and Communications from SUNY Potsdam and is currently working towards her doctoral degree in Communications from Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario.


George Koduah Liberty League Co-Guard of the Week
Koduah tied a career-high with 18 points against Paul Smith's, producing a double-double in less than 20 minutes, and then added 14 points on 7-for-10 shooting against Elmira. He shot 70.0% from the floor (14-for-20) for the week and averaged 6.5 rebounds in the two wins.


Casey Capello Liberty Lague Co-Guard of the Week
Capello averaged 20.3 points per game, including a career-high 29 point performance against Ithaca College, leading the Saints to a 2-1 week. The Hanover, MA native recorded 16 points and six rebounds in a 72-58 win over Plattsburgh State on Tuesday, and then netted her career and game-high 29 points with four steals on Friday in an 82-80 loss to Ithaca. She capped the weekend with 16 points as the Saints defeated the Elmira College Soaring Eagles 79-66 on Saturday.


Kelly Legg Liberty League Co-Rookie of the Week
Legg averaged 17.0 points, 6.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.6 blocks per contest as the Saints went 2-1 on the week. She recorded 20 points and six rebounds in a 72-58 win over Plattsburgh State on Tuesday and then scored 11 points with a block and two steals in an 82-80 loss to Ithaca on Friday. She closed out the weekend with a double-double performance, scoring 20 points while adding 10 rebounds, three assists and two blocks in a 79-66 victory over Elmira on Saturday.


Justin Spalik Liberty League Track Performer of the Week
Spalik won the 60 hurdles in 8.80 seconds and anchored the winning 4x400 relay team which won in 3:34.10 as the Saints won the season-opening Can/Am Challenge. He also finished fourth in the long jump.


Jacquelynn Lemme Liberty League Track Performer of the Week
Lemme won the 1000 meters in 3:18.28 to help the Saints to the team title in the Can/Am Challenge on Saturday.


Lisa Baron Liberty League Co-Field Performer of the Week
Baron won the shot put with a 11.63 meter throw, and won the weight throw with a 11.35 meter throw to help the Saints to the team title in the Can/Am Challenge.


Hannah Kinsey Liberty League Rookie of the Week
Kinsey finished third in the 60 meters, fifth in the 300 meters and anchored the 4x200 relay for the Saints in their win in the Can/Am Challenge.

NORTH COUNTRY WARRIORS CHOOSE LEONARD AS HEAD COACH
Sources close to 99 Sports have learned that the newest Semi-Pro football team in St. Lawrence County, the North Country Warriors, have selected Gordon Leonard as their head coach and Darrin McHenry as assistant coach.  Leonard has played for both the previous two semi-pro football teams in St. Lawrence County while McHenry has previous coaching experience at the semi-pro level  The Warriors are set to play in the Northeast Football Alliance starting this summer.
