"FREE RANGE" POULTRY MAY NOT BE BETTER FOR YOU, EXPERT SAYS--Dr.David Carpenter of SUNY Albany, a leading public health advocate told an audience in Canton this week the fact "free range" birds are sometimes, but not always fed the same commercial feed as caged factory-farm birds--containing beef fat and fish meal--means they could also be exposed to dioxins, PCB's and other contaminants.
FOUR ARRESTS MADE IN AKWESASNE OXYCONTIN BUST--A cooperative effort by state, federal, and local law enforcement arrested 31-year-old Donna Lazore and 31-year-old Nathan Benedict of Cornwall Island, 20-year-old Shane Dustin of Fort Covington, and 27-year-old Neil Lauzon of Plattsburgh on federal counts alleging they worked to either supply or distribute the highly-addictive painkiller on Akwesasne. All face detention hearings.
LAYOFFS AT NEWTON FALLS FINE PAPER IN TEMPORARY SHUTDOWN--83 workers will be affected by the idling of the paper mill beginning in mid-December until Spring, 2011. The workers will receive three weeks pay and continued benefits during the idling. About 15 office and production staff will remain on board over that time. The Watertown Daily Times quotes a press release from management saying the shutdown will allow the company to 'reinvent itself' and find ways to make the mill profitable. Global demand for product is cited as the main reason for the idle.
SUNY CANTON DORM ROOM SEES BEDBUGS--A room in Smith Residence was found to have the insects this week; the room was fumigated and the two students in the room received new mattresses. They washed their clothes and bed linens several times. The infestation is the first of its kind in the North Country. An education campaign is underway on campus.
