THE COST OF A POLICE PATROLMAN 7-13 MILLION DOLLARS, POTSDAM TRUSTEE SAYS--Steve Yurgartis cast the lone 'no' vote Monday on the hiring of a new Police officer, Shawn Mc.Cargar. Yurgartis's cost estimate is combined salary and benefits, while the officer would be working and after retirement. He says it's like 'using a credit card with money we don't have'. Trustees voted 3-2 to make the hire previously; Trustee Steve Warr says he agrees with Yurgartis, but the commitment was made by the majority--Trustees George Regan and Ruth Garner, and Mayor Ron Tischler--and the Board cannot go back on its word. Last night's vote was 3:1, with Garner having an excused absence.
