EARLY MORNING BARN FIRE NEAR HEUVELTON--Trucks from Heuvelton and surrounding departments were called beginning at 4:32 this morning to the Cook property, 251 Mc.Ilwee Road. Standbys were called from as far away as Richville and Morley.

"SMART GROWTH" CONFOUNDING, PLANNER SAYS--St.Lawrence County Planning Director Keith Zimmerman told the county Planning Board last week one of the issues facing Potsdam and many other communities is idle infrastructure, and "death by slow growth"--creating developments that generate jobs and tax revenue while at the same time preserving community character. Zimmerman made those comments last week as the board considered a proposed rezoning from R-1 to PUD of a parcel on outer Lawrence Avenue in Potsdam for an office building. The PUD was rejected.

POT, METH BUST ON ROUTE 310--US Border Patrol agents stopped a vehicle driven by Donald Griffith, age and hometown not listed, last Friday. They became suspicious after Griffith reportedly told them he was on his way from Malone to Utica. A check of the trunk turned up about 28 pounds of marijuana and about 7 pounds of methamphetamine. Griffith was arraigned before a Syracuse Federal Judge and held until a detention hearing today.
