99 NEWS FOR WEDNESDAY, JUNE 30TH, 2010

ED TISCHLER CHOSEN CHIEF OF POTSDAM POLICE--Trustees voted 4-0, with one abstention from Mayor Ron Tischler, his brother; to hire Tischler to the post vacated by retiring John Kaplan effective August 18th. Kaplan remains on the payroll until August 17th. Salary was set at just under $78-thousand dollars a year. Longtime Police officer Tischler became Lieutenant-Detective of the department when Kaplan was elevated to Chief from that same post.

WARNER BROUGHT BACK AS POTSDAM VILLAGE COURT CLERK--Trustees voted 4-0 Tuesday to re-hire Shelly Warner to the clerk's post, from which she was terminated last August after she spoke to the media about concerns over safety issues in the Civic Center. Warner sued; she agreed to drop the litigation in exchange for her job back and a settlement of about 12-thousand dollars. Warner agreed not to speak publicly about the case.

'MOVE THE EARTH' DURING SUMMER FESTIVAL--Clarkson University is mounting an ambitious event during Potsdam Summerfest next week. Saturday, July 10th at 1pm an inflatable, six-foot replica of the planet will be moved by a chain of students, faculty, staff, and community members from Old Snell downtown to the hill campus. The event is meant to be a show of support for the link between the University and the community. Clarkson President Tony Collins is expected to have a major role in lifting up the earth-ball.

RUSSELL COMMENTS ON SCHOOL AID VETOED BY GOVERNOR--Governor Paterson was set to veto budget bills Tuesday; Russell says the veto after the restoration of 600-million-dollars in school aid is a disappointment; it would have meant 6 million dollars to her district alone comprised of mostly highest-need schools.
