99 NEWS HEADLINES FOR THURSDAY, 3/25/10

POTSDAM SCHOOL SUPER EXPLAINS ATHLETIC BUDGET CUT--Pat Brady told the public in a budget hearing Tuesday the reason why athletics are cut 10 percent is because that's the state aid loss projected for that area. Brady says when athletics are cut at Potsdam, it affects other schools. The issue has been raised of equity, concern that athletics received less of a cut than other areas of the budget. Potsdam Central anticipates a budget deficit of more than a million dollars next year.

OGDENSBURG PRISON KEPT IN ASSEMBLY BUDGET PACKAGE--The news the Assembly has kept funding for OCF comes as an Assembly GOP Task Force recommends double-bunking be eliminated, administrative duties be handled by less staff, and other changes.  The Senate budget also keeps the prison open.  The joint houses in conference, then each house separately, and then the Governor must approve the measure in the final spending plan for the OCF preservation be a done deal.  

PARKS, TAP AND OTHER FUNDING KEPT IN ASSEMBLY BUDGET PLAN--Addie Russell, 118th District representative says perhaps the greatest victory in addition to keeping OCF is a reviolving loan fund from NYPA for local businesses with less than 100 employees.

FIREFIGHTERS SAVE MOST OF DEKALB HOME--Trucks rolled to the property of Patrick and Bruce Downing on County Route 14 about 2:50 Wednesday afternoon. Flames were confined to a bedroom. Nobody was hurt.

GM POWERTRAIN WILL COME DOWN AS EARLY AS JULY--The Watertown Daily Times reports officials from the General Motors spinoff holding compnay that now owns the property met with Massena Town Supervisor Joe Gray and others about plans to demolish the old foundry, vacant since last year. The tear-down is reportedly meant to facilitate environmental cleanup.
