LADY BEARS LOSE BUT BOY STONERS ROLL |

SUNY POTSDAM WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: The SUNY Potsdam women’s basketball team held a nine point lead at halftime but visiting William Smith came back in the second half to defeat the Bears 87-77 on Tuesday night. The Bears record is now 1-8. Four Bears scored in double figures led by Cortney Poirier (Moira/Brushton-Moira) who had 24 points, eight rebounds and five steals. Rachel Graf (Elbridge/Jordan-Elbrdige) had 18 points and seven rebounds, Aimee Kellicutt (Lisle/Broome CC) had 16 points, and Brittany Whitton (Dekalb Jct./Herman-Dekalb) had 12 points. Kristen Kush led the Herons with 18 points. Potsdam led throughout most of the first half. The Bears shot 50% from the field and led in the paint 18-8. It was 46-37 Potsdam going into halftime. The Bears picked up where they left off in the second half as Graf’s layup made it 52-39 at 18:19. The Herons, however, would go on a 17-3 run to take a one point lead at 10:55 and prevent the Bears from running away with the game. The teams traded baskets as there were seven lead changes. Poirer’s layup made it 73-71 William Smith with 2:24 left to play in the game. A foul on William Smith put Poirier on the line but she missed the free throw for the three-point play and the Herons took advantage and scored on a Kush jumper. A subsequent Potsdam turnover turned into Heron points and all Potsdam could do was foul and William Smith converted nine free throws to pull away for the victory. The Bears resume conference play on the road against Fredonia this Friday at 6 pm. BOYS HS BASKETBALL: The Sandstoners (10-0, 4-0 Central) pulled away to an 83-46 victory over
Malone to remain the lone unbeaten team in the NAC, with all five Potsdam
starters scoring in double figures.
³(Former Canton coach) Jerry Hourihan was here and he¹s had a big impact on
my coaching career. We go way back and I hope to see him stop by practice
soon,² noted coach Kmack after his team reversed an early 13-12 deficit with
a 14-0 run to lead 26-13 after one quarter before pulling away to a 47-23
halftime lead.
Potsdam led by as many 44 points in the second half as junior forward Zach
Adams led the way with 21 points and 10 rebounds. John Coleman tallied 16
points, five rebounds, five steals and five assists while Scott Bartenstein
(2 three-pointers) contributed 10 points, 10 assists and five boards for the
winners.
³We turned it up offensively after trading baskets early on,² said coach
Kmack.
³John Coleman has been unbelievable for us and Scott Bartenstein is a
premier shooter, but he¹s distributing the ball very well this year and
becoming more of a pure point guard. And we played everybody tonight, played
the young kids a lot.²
Also for Potsdam, Chris Whispell scored 15 points while Josh Adams added 12
points and 12 rebounds.
For Malone, Jake Gravel scored 15 points while Jordan Cosgrove added
eight. Coaches are always looking for players who can provide scoring
sparks off the bench.
Lisbon Central Coach Sean Backus went to his bench looking for a shooting
spark in Tuesday¹s home game against Harrisville and received a forrest
fire of offense.
Reserve guard David Latulip fired in a eight three-pointers enroute to a
31-point performance to lift the Golden Knights (4-1, 6-2) to a 57-38 NAC
West victory over Harrisville (3-1, 4-4) which suffered its first league
loss.
The Knights overcame an early deficit and broke away from a 21-20 halftime
lead.
³David hit his first three shots and then his confidence level went high. We
played solid defense, switching back and forth from our fullcourt man to a
half-court trap,² said LCS Coach Sean Backus.
LaTulip also grabbed seven boards while Eric Mehaffy delivered six points,
10 rebounds and five assists. Ryan Akins posted four assists and six points
and Scott Lawton chipped in seven boards and two points. Jason Thomas scored
15 points for Harrisville and Tyler Davis added 10.
Bellville-Henderson 48, Heuvelton 36: Bellville Henderson took a 22-4 lead
after the first quarter and turned back HCS (6-3) comeback efforts. Brandon
Tibbles and Jeric Hodge each scored 12 points for the winners. Andrew Ross
scored nine points and Jesse Hargrave added eight to pace Heuvelton which
saw a five-game win streak end David Putman added seven points.
Salmon River 50, C-P 45: Willie Benko went 12-for-12 at the foulline in a
21 point effort to lift the Shamrocks who won the second half 30-25 in an
NAC East contest. Mike Reilly delivered 20 points including eight of 13 free

GIRLS HOCKEY:The Massena Central girls hockey got 2010 off to a promising
start on Tuesday night, skating to a 2-1 league win over Lake Placid at the
1932 Olympic Rink.
³This was a very nice way to start the new year. Hopefully we can use it to
get something going for the rest of the year,² said coach Jenn Gray after
the Lady Raiders improved to 2-2-1 by rallying from an early deficit to down
the Lady Blue Bombers.
Brenna Whitney opened the scoring just 2:59 into the game off an assist from
Kendra Manning but the Lady Raiders pulled even six minutes later when
Orenda Herne finished off a play set up by Shaydi Oakes and Brittany
Beckstead at the 8:51 mark.
The eventual game-winner came with just 21 seconds left in the middle frame
when Emily Underwood converted on the first high school career assist for
freshman Josie Wood.
³We got a lot of good contributions from some of our younger players. Josie
played very well and so did Courtney Manley (7th Grader) , Kharlene Garrow
(8th Grade) and Jennifer Barney (9th Grade),² noted coach Gray.
Junior Lindsey Russello handled 17 shots backstopping the win while Marinna
Flagg posted 27 saves working the Lake Placid crease.
The Lady Raiders return to action on Friday with a Girls Hockey League game
at the Massena Arena against Ithaca starting at 7 p.m.
SLC FALLS TO SARANAC LAKE
In the only other Girls Hockey League game played on Tuesday, St. Lawrence
Central suffered a 6-2 setback at home to Saranac Lake.
The Red Storm jumped out to an early 2-0 lead when Sydney Battistoni struck
for an unassisted goal just 44 seconds into the game and Mallory Cotter
netted the first of her three goals at the 1:42 mark. Megan Mueller made it
3-0 with 40 seconds left in the opening frame.
Jordyn Clothier got SLC on the board at 3:11 of the second period with the
first of her two unassisted goals but the Red Storm countered with goals by
Mueller and Cotter to make it 6-1 after two periods.
Clothier¹s second of the game came at 4:47 of the third period. Cotter
closed out the scoring and completed her hattrick with 1:21 remaining.
Cotter also recorded a solo assist while Mackenzie Cotter helped set up
three of the Saranac Lake goals.
Breanne Johnson started in goal for the Lady Larries and turned aside 24 of
the shots she faced through the first two periods before giving way to
Stephanie Peets, who stopped 10 of the 11 shots sent her way in the final
frame. Ashley Pittman made 25 saves for the win.
The Lady Larries slipped to 107 with the loss and will be hitting the road
for a lengthy road trip this weekend with games at Chazy on Friday and
Albany Academy on Saturday.
GIRLS BASKETBALL:
The OFA Girls claimed a well-earned grind-it-out NAC Central 45-41 victory
of the second category on Tuesday night turning back a tenacious fourth
quarter comeback by Massena.
³Tonight we won the game by doing the little things right and by not turning
the ball over,² said OFA Coach Mark Henry after the 4-4 Devils upped their
league record to 2-1 and dropped 1-5 Massena to 1-2.
³We really can¹t go after people defensively with Megan Morrison still
slowed by an ankle injury but the girls are working very hard. Lindsay
Drummond had a very big offensive rebound late in the game for us and Elissa
St. Germain came through with another big game.²
Drummond ran down the rebound of missed free throw near the sideline and
saved the ball to Chelsea Martin with the Devils protecting a 42-39 lead
with 45 seconds to play. The precious possession led to Morrison calmly
swishing two free throws which settled the issue for the Devils who had
missed five of six free throws while Massena whittled a 39-31 deficit with
4:00 to play to 41-39 on a foul line jumper by Kristen McKeel with 1:10
left.
The Devils, who play Carthage on Friday (5:30 p.m. JV start) built their
lead with their best transition sequences of the game led by Martin¹s (5
assists, 5 rebounds) open floor bursts. St. Germain continued to score
efficiently on the perimeter and the interior, delivering 19 points with six
rebounds.
Drummond, who also buried a free throw to create a two-possession game with
13.6 seconds to play, finished with nine points and six rebounds. Morrison
scored five of her eight points in the fourth quarter with a timely three in
a decisive 10-1 run.
Paulina Behrens hit two three-pointers in leading the Raiders¹ late rally
and finished with 17 points. Allison Holliday delivered eight points and
eight rebounds, Caitlin Miller grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and McKeel
added eight rebounds.
Brushton-Moira stayed unbeaten in Northern Athletic Conference East
League Girls Basketball action on Tuesday, handing Madrid-Waddington its
first league setback, 45-34, at the hive.
³The game was much closer than the score indicates. We were down four and we
had to foul them at the end. Brushton-Moira played very smart defense in the
second half after a few players got into foul trouble in the first half,²
said M-W Coach Gary Tischler.
The Panthers (4-0, 4-0) used a balanced effort to overcome a huge rebounding
performance by the Jackets (2-1, 5-2). Haylea Gary scored 11 points to lead
the Panthers. Chenice Russell followed with nine and Shayna Russell and
Taylor Keck each added eight.
Jenna Cryderman tossed in 11 points, grabbed six rebounds and collected
three steals for the Jackets. Alex Martin grabbed 12 rebounds and scored 10
points. Kristin King chipped in three points, 10 rebounds and three steals.
In the junior varsity contest, Madrid-Waddington topped Brushton-Moira
39-33. Katie Marcellus scored 16 points and Meghan Gabri added 10 to lift
the Jackets. Lauren Sharp added six for the winners.
Jessica Jacques scored 16 points to pace B-M which went on a 7-2 run to end
the contest. Amanda Parent and Brooke Boyea added six each.
Salmon River 48, C-P 33: Aubrey Phillips scored 13 points and Anna Kelly
added eight to lift the Shamrocks past the Colts. Brooke Baker and Taylor
Bonno each scored eight for C-P.
Chateaugay 48, St. Regis Falls 32: The Bulldogs rode a solid first half to
deny the Saints as Boyea generated 17 points and Candice Fowler added 16
more to lead the Bulldogs. Krista Lucas scored 11 points for the Saints.
SLC 39, P-H 20: Molly McCuin tallied 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds
and Autumn Irwin chipped in seven points, 11 rebounds and six steals to lift
the Larries who opened to a 22-10 halftime lead. Ashley Thayer (10 rebounds,
five steals) and Jenna Evans (eight points, three steals) also contributed.
Rebecca Remington scored 12 points for P-H.
Hammond used a furious fourth quarter comeback to record a 48-37 win over
Hermon-DeKalb in Tuesday¹s NAC West Girls Basketball action.
And found itself all alone atop the standings with a major solid from Lisbon
which handed Harrisville its first loss 38-38. Harrisville and Hammond meet
on Friday. Morristown edged Edwards-Knox 45-42 in the other league action
and, Heuvelton stayed unbeaten in JV play downing previously unbeaten
Clifton-Fine.
Hammond 48 - H-D 37: Freshman guard Alyssa Crosby buried three
three-pointers in the fourth quarter and Malynda Jenne netted one as the
Hammond (4-0, 8-2) won a meeting of NAC West unbeatens with a 21-9 run.
Jenne finished with a game-high 19 points and Crosby tallied 11 for the
Devils who took sole control of the lead.
³We played very well and lead for the first three quarters but Hammond had
just an unbelievable fourth quarter,² said H-D Coach Steve Morrill.
³Our girls have played very hard all season and they did a nice job
tonight.²
Rochelle Whitton delivered a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double with five
steals for H-D (3-1, 7-3) and six assists and Brianna Sayer netted 15 points
with five rebounds, two steals and three assists.
Lisbon 38, Harrisville 30: Aleashia Parmeter scored a pair of free throws
after an intentional foul and Jaclyn Moore scored off a putback on the next
possession to give the Golden Knights a six point lead with 30 seconds to
play for the win.
³The key was shutting down Patty Coloney. She had four first half fouls and
didn¹t play much in the third quarter but defensively we kept them to one
and out most of the game. Offensively, we executed and attacked the hoop and
that¹s something we haven¹t done consistently. We¹ve got to do that against
Heuvelton on Friday,² said LCS Coach Dick Marcellus.
Jaclyn Moore finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds for Lisbon (2-3, 5-4).
Aleashia Parmeter added nine points. Alison Akins went seven of eight from
the foulline and grabbed six rebounds. Mackenzie Walker grabbed six
rebounds.
Patty Coloney scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Harrisville.
Katelyn Hart and Desiree Hall (seven rebounds) each scored seven.
Morristown 45, Edwards-Knox 42: Liz Whalen produced 12 points and Gabby
Marshall provided 10 including a three pointer to lift the Rockets (2-3,
2-6) who used a 15-9 first quarter start to spark the win. Katie Porter,
Leah White and Desiree Dulmage added five points each. Kaylee Hartley and
