99 NEWS FOR FRIDAY, JANUARY 1ST, 2010 DOG CREDITED WITH SAVING RESIDENTS FROM HARM IN CANTON FIRE--Firefighters say a barking dog awakened residents of the duplex at 26 Gouverneur St. early Thursday morning, allowing them to escape safely. The duplex was declared a total loss; information was not available as to the owner's or residents' names. The first call came in about 2am; there was a re-kindle about 10am. STATE LEGISLATORS SAY LOCAL PRISON CUTS UNLIKELY--Assembly Member Addie Russell and Senator Darrell Aubertine told St.Lawrence County Legislators this week the Watertown hub, of which all three prisons in St.Lawrence County are a part, is viewed as an example of cost-efficiency the state is focusing on right now, and there have been no discussions of cuts to any of them. Rumors have persisted of cuts. Russell says she has heard nothing related to the local jails, but that doesn't mean one cannot end up on a list. The two prisons in Ogdensburg and one in Gouverneur are viewed as crucial economc engines. TROOPER BITTEN, MAN ARRESTED--20-year-old Daniel Zimmerman allegedly struck his younger brother with an acoustic guitar, breaking the boy's nose in a dispute in the Town of Oswegatchie Wednesday. Zimmerman allegedly bit the arresting State Police member in the wrist, causing numerous open wounds. He was charged with assault, chaild endangeriment, and resisting; arraigned and jailed in lieu of $5,250 bail.
