BOYS HS HOCKEY: Dakota Sharp lived up to his last name on Wednesday night, leading
the Canton Central boys hockey team to a 1-0 Division I victory over Potsdam
in the Bears¹ Northern Athletic Conference opener.
The senior goaltender showed himself to be slick in turning aside all 27
shots he faced, including 11 in the third period where his team was outshot
11-2.
³Dakota played a good game today. I was happy with our effort, but we just
didn¹t cash inon our opportunities,² said Potsdam coach Al Benda whose team
had beaten Canton 3-2 at the Canton Tournament two weeks ago.
³On any given night, either of these teams is capable of beating the other,
no matter the record or ranking, and my guys were aware of that.²
For Canton (3-3-1, 1-0-0 NAC), the only goal of the game came at the 10:25
mark of the first period when Trent Durocher centered the puck to Matt Flynn
whose 20-foot wrister found the lower right corner.
³Dakota in goal was huge for us. Potsdam peppered him and he did a good job
controlling the rebounds. And the big thing was we worked hard. We overcame
running around a little bit, because we worked so hard,² said Canton coach
Randy Brown.
³This makes the new year a little better. To beat Potsdam and to do it here
at Pine Street is a double bonus.²
Evan Drummatter made 12 saves in goal for Potsdam (5-3-1, 1-1-1 NAC).
OFA 2, Massena 1 At Massena, Chris Harper made 28 saves in leading OFA over
Massena.
After David Peets opened the scoring from Evan Raymo at 1:41 of the first
period for the Raiders, OFA answered with a pair of second period goals by
Eric Barr and Eric Whitcombe.
Nathan Lint made 12 saves in goal for Massena (6-5, 3-1 NAC).
³They capitalized on their chances and we just couldn¹t finish. Harper made
a lot of good saves,² noted Raider coach Mike Trimboli SLC 7, TI 2 The Larries jumped out to a 5-0 first-period lead and never
looked back as Zach Baldwin finished with three goals, Charles Dullea with a
goal and two assists, Andrew Fiske with a goal and one assist, Brady Helmer
with two assists and Blake Baldwin and Kyle Strader with a goal apiece for
the winners.
Freshman Nate McLaughlin made 20 saves in goal in his first game for SLC
(5-3) while Sorrell made 14 saves and Montante added 17 more for the
Vikings. GIRLS BASKETBALL: Fighting off a Carthage comeback, the OFA Blue Devils Girls
Basketball team earned its third win of the season - second in a row after
four losses - in a 53-48 nonleague victory over Carthage Wednesday.
The Comets tied the game at 45-45 but Lindsay Drummond scored to break the
tie with less than 2:30 to play and Meg Dodge converted a three to make it
50-45.
Drummond finished with 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Elissa St.
Germain generated 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Devils.
Chelsea Martin chipped in nine points and a career high 10 assists and four
steals while Megan Morrison and Meg Dodge followed with nine points and
eight. Mackenzie Cole grabbed seven rebounds.
"Elissa St. Germain had another double-double and did a great job
neutralizing Sarah Johnson. And Chelsea Martin played 32 minutes and did a
nice job attacking the basket getting to the line 10 times and had a career
high 10 assists,² said OFA Coach Mark Henry whose team faces Massena on
Tuesday.
³Megan Morrison returned to action and gave a spark off the bench hitting
two three's in the second quarter while Lindsay Drummond also had a
double-double and made a big basket to break a 45-45 tie. Meg Dodge stepped
up and is really starting to get comfortable as an 8th grader and does not
hesitate to take the big shot."
Percy paced Carthage with 19 points including four three¹s. Johnson added 12
points.
Chateaugay 39, Chazy 29 The Bulldogs won every quarter and sealed the win
with a 14-10 fourth improving to 3-2 on the season. Cindy Harrigan scored 12
while Marissa Cook added nine more. Olivia Seymour scored eight for Chazy. BOYS BASKETBALL: After coming down with an intestinal virus on Tuesday night,
Heuvelton Central Coach Josh McAllister suffered through constant chills as
he coached the Bulldogs in the championship game of the 17th annual Al
Gutterson Memorial Tournament on Wednesday evening.
And his Bulldogs passed out those same feelings to defending tournament
champion Tupper Lake.
Playing an aggressive and over-playing man-to-man defense, the Bulldogs
stopped the Lumberjacks cold at crucial points of the game in a low-scoring
but high energy 45-34 victory. ³I think we may have turned the corner as a
team. The guys played excellent defense tonight. Andrew Ross has stepped
forward to become our point guard and Zach Limoges has really come on
inside,² said Coach McAllister after his 6-3 team won its fourth straight
game following up a league win over Lisbon on Tuesday.
³We have won four straight games and Dave Putman is still struggling with
his outside shot. He is going to come around very soon and that will make us
even better.²
Along with providing direction in the halfcourt offense, Ross also buried
key jump shots in scoring a game-high 13 points and was honored as the
tournament¹s Most Valuable Player. Limoges earned an All-Tournament
selection after providing outstanding interior defense while also sharing
rebounding honors with Jesse Hargrave who finished with four of his eight
points in the fourth quarter.
Trevor Brothers continued his timely shooting, scoring nine points and
Putman scored off some nifty moves down the lane to tally six of his seven
points in the second half. Al Ashley and Jon Kingsley also contributed tough
denial defense for the Bulldogs who limited the Lumberjacks to single digit
scoring in three of the four quarters.
Tupper Lake¹s All-Tournament duo of Hayden LaMere and Jacob Klossner
finished with 10 and 12 points.
Lisbon 60 - Hammond 32
Dave LaTulip came off the bench and buried a pair of
three-pointers in a seven-point second quarter which sparked Hammond to a
20-5 run. LaTulip finished with 13 points along with All-Tournament
selection Eric Mehaffy (4 rebounds).
Mike McDonell tallied 12 points with six assists and five steals and Scott
Lawton contributed eight points, four rebounds and five steals. Hammond's
All-Tourney pick Griff Stark-Ennis tallied a game-high 16 points with nine
rebounds and two blocks and Ian Mann netted 10 points.
Athletic Director Elisha Dejesus was a proud Rocket on
Wednesday evening, presiding at the 5th Annual Morristown Central Booster
Club Christmas Holiday Tournament.
³I couldn¹t be more prouder of our Morristown community. When one of our
members (Coach Mike Roberts) lost his hom, this community showed its true
colors during the tournament, raising over $1,400 for the family. Coach
Roberts isn¹t here tonight but I know he¹ll appreciate it,² said DeJesus
after the Rockets earned their first win on the season after a 0-7 start.
And those sentiments were echoed by his volunteer assistant coach, Junior
Aldrich.
³Coach Roberts is very thankful towards our community here at Morristown,²
said the Assistant Coach after he and volunteer assistant Richie Marshall
guided the Rockets to a 56-51 win.
³We tried every defense tonight. And Parishville-Hopkinton did a great job
of breaking them. Eventually, we just settled into a 2-3 zone. We don¹t have
much size or depth. Eric Robinson did a great job on the boards for us and
Jeff King had a great game. But Connor Learn¹s and Josh Young¹s
threepointers down the stretch were crucial,² said Aldrich.
Learn hit a three pointer with 5:30 to play to answer P-H¹s 5-0 run to start
the fourth quarter to go up 46-45. Young made it 49-45 later in the quarter
and, after P-H scored two free throws, King scored inside on a drive and
Learn posted a short jumper for a 53-47 advantage with 1:21 to play.
Later in the fourth, Eric Zellweger scored 1-for-2 free throws and Titus
Hammel scored off a rebound to cut the deficit to 53-51, but Young went 1-2
with 0:17 to play and King was put on the line after getting a board after a
Panther three went wide.
King finished with 18 points including six of nine from the foulline to go
with five rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Learn added 14 points and
posted five assists while Eric Robinson scored 10 points and hauled in 15
rebounds. Drew Lipinsky added seven points, two steals and two rebounds.
Eric Zellweger scored 14 points in going six of eight at the foulline. Brian
Bicknell added 12 points, all from three pointers, while Hammell added nine.
Trevor Zellweger chipped in eight and Nick Avery added six.
The Booster Club recognized five players for All Tournament team honors and
five for their Sportsmanship.
Honored with Sportsmanship awards were Jordan Kendall of Madrid-Waddington,
Blake Wilcox of Parishville-Hopkinton, Taylor Artus of St. Regis Falls, Dan
Sides of Alexandria Bay, and Eric Robinson of Morristown.
All Star Selections were presented to: Colin O¹Bryan of Madrid-Waddington,
Eric Zellweger of Parisvhille-Hopkinton, Billy LaBounty of St. Regis Falls,
Vinny Hoover of Alexandria Bay, and Jeff King of Morristown.
Meanwhile, St. Regis Falls earned a 2-0 mark at the Morristown Booster Club
Holiday Tournament on Wednesday at Morristown Central School, claiming a
41-36 victory over Alexandria Bay.
St. Regis 41, Alex Bay 36 "We has a lapse in the second quarter but we
hung in there. Again, Billy LaBounty proved to be a big difference tonight.
He got some rebounds and scored some big points. Alex Bay's press threw us
off in the second half but capitalizing on the technical foul in the fourth
was a big factor," said SRF Coach Justin Todd.
St, Regis Fall¹s Steve Brown scored a free throw and later scored on a short
jumper for a 37-31 lead with :40 to play and after Alex Bay scored, the
Saints¹ Joe Destefano nailed a pair of free throws with :25 left after a
technical foul was called. LaBounty scored two more free throws for a 41-33
advantage and the Saints allowed just three more points the rest of the way.
LaBounty scored 10 points and posted 16 rebounds for the Saints. Dan DeBuque
added two three's in an eight point effort. Hoover finished with 14 points
for Alex Bay.
OFA completed the 2009 portion of its schedule with a tale of
two halves against Plattsburgh High School at the Plattsburgh State
Fieldhouse on Saturday.
And fortunately for the Blue Devils (6-2) their second half was a vintage 20
minutes as they overcome a 24-7 deficit midway through the first half and
then turned back a last ditch Plattsburgh rally to claim a 71-66 victory and
a 2-0 record in the NAC-CVAC Challenge.
³We were terribly flat in the first half but fortunately for us our second
half was much better and Gene Bouyer probably played the best half of his
career,² said OFA Coach Bill Merna after Bouyer scored 27 of his career-high
42 points after intermission and grabbed 15 of his 19 rebounds.
³Plattsburgh was a small, quick team and Gene (Bouyer) just dominated the
boards. We ran our motion offense and we did a good job getting him the ball
around the rim, and he finished.²
Bouyer (4 assists, 3 steals, 3 blocked shots) enjoyed an 18-for-23 shooting
night and fell just two points short of matching the schoo¹s single game
scoring record held by John Wright of the 1980s and John Wright of the
1950s. Bouyer capped his stellar evening by netting four straight free
throws to deny the Hornets who had one chance to pull within one point in
the final 30 seconds.
Dave Crowder (4 assists) tallied nine of his 13 points in helping to fuel
the Devil comeback, Jared Morrow contributed six points and six rebounds to
the win, Jake Rishe netted six points and Owen Luckie added five rebounds,
three assists and four steals.
PHS¹s Kyle LaPoint enjoyed an outstanding second half of his own, scoring 17
of his 21 points.
The OFA win also helped the NAC regain the Don Petty Trophy by winning the
holiday challenge for the first time in eight years. Potsdam and
Brushton-Moira also won on Wednesday for the NAC.
In the junior varsity game, OFA was unable to stage a second half comeback
against PHS which was led by Rob Fout¹s 18 points. Cavan LaRose scored 13
points for OFA and Dave Dalton tallied seven.
Potsdam 69 Peru 41 Jon Coleman tossed in 22 points, collected seven steals
and handed out five assists to pace the unbeaten Sandstoners. Scott
Bartenstein added 18 points and seven assists while Josh Adams (12
rebounds), Chris Whispel (six rebounds, three assists) and Zach Adams
(seven rebounds) followed with eight, eight and seven points.
Robert Duquette scored 20 points for Peru.
Moriah 54, St. Lawrence 42 The Larries couldn¹t match the Vikings size as
Hayden Whalen scored 20 points and Tom Tesar and Ralph Schofield scored
eight each to lead the winners. Rylan Patraw scored 10 for SLC. Camden
Durant and Quinn Patraw each added eight.
Brushton-Moira 63, Seton Catholic 16: Jumping out to a 33-5 halftime lead,
the Panthers improved to 2-2. Josh Sevey generated 22 points while John
Green added 15 more.
Beekmantown 71 Malone 59 Malone¹s Cody Gibson and Brad Doe went down with
injuries in the second half and Beekmantown took advantage with a 38-24 run.
Malo Valerian scored 21 points including two three¹s and Devon Anderson and
Tom Ryan each added 17 to lead Beekmantown.
Jared Heden scored 16 points and Austin Dunlavey added 15 more to lead the
Huskies. Jake Gravel added 10.
Saranac 58, Gouverneur 38 Balanced scoring and a 33-11 first half advantage
sparked Saranac as Jeremy Bullis tallied 11 points and Dylan Everleth scored
10 more to lead the way.
Marco Carbone and Lee French each scored 12 points for Gouverneur. Massena non league win over Oswego 61 to 50 with trevor bacon leading the way for the raiders with game high 20 points
