GIRLS BASKETBALL:

Potsdam 43, Hammond 41

 In a consolation game that pitted the defending
Class B champion Sandstoners against the defending Class D champion Lady Red
Devils, neither team led by more than four points and the lead changed sides
eight times over the last three quarters before Potsdam closed with a 10-4
run over the final 3:38 to claim the win.
Hammond went into the fourth quarter trailing 33-30 but senior Maklynda
Jenne hit a three-pointer with 4:55 left in regulation to cap a 7-0 run that
put the Lady Red Devils ahead. Potsdam countered with four straight points
to tie the game before Jenne converted again to make it 39-37. Junior
Veronica Sapp tied the game with a short-range putback with 1:20 remaining
before Natalie Carranza put Potsdam back on top 28 seconds later when she
converted a pair from the foul line. Jenne, who finished with 17 points and
earned a spot on the All-Tournament team, pulled Hammond even when she
connected for two foul shots with 30 seconds left but Sapp got the ball on
the ensuing possession and found the bottom of the net with a mid-range
pull-up jumper for what would stand as the game-winning basket.
Sapp wound up netting a game-high 19 points while Carranza, who scored 11 of
the first 13 points of the game for the Lady Sandstoners, finished with 17
to gain a spot on the All-Tournament Team. Tricia Boland and Brianne Langtry
contributed eight points each toward the Hammond cause while Courtney Whalen
and Alyssa Crosby both netted four.

Malone 51, Harrisville 28

 The Lady Pirates got the championship game off to
a promising start when Katlyn Hart buried a three-pointer from the top of
the circle to open the scoring but the Lady Huskies answered by reeling off
the next nine points en route to building a 21-10 halftime lead.
³We pushed the ball up the floor right from the get go-getting the ball to
the open person. Offense did a great job moving the ball and getting good
looks at the basket,² noted coach Shelley Skelly after the Lady Huskies
reeled off their third convincing win on the road in as many days to improve
to 7-1 overall.
Tournament MVP Brittany Marshall generated a game-high 13 points while
grabbing five rebounds and notching four steals to spark the Lady Huskies.
Kelsey Johnson tallied 11 points, four rebounds and two assist in landing a
spot on the All-Tournament team while Amanda Gadway worked the paint for 10
points and a team high seven boards.
Patty Coloney anchored the Harrisville offense with nine points

The Canton Central girls basketball team fell to Class AA power
West Genesee 87-52 on Tuesday in the consolation game of the Fulton
Tournament.
Apps scored 29 points for West Genesee.
For Canton, Emily Archibald scored 17 points while All Tournament selection
Emily Rexford added 15.

In a Section 7-10 Girls¹ Basketball Challenge game played in Champlain, the
Massena Central varity girls got off to a good start scoring the first six
points of the game before going on to drop a 57-48 decision to host
Northeastern Clinton.
³They were a very good team,² said Lady Raider coach Andrea Matejcik. ³We
started well but then we had a bit of letdown.²
³We made some adjustments at halftime that worked out for us and we got back
in the game. We just missed some lay-ups at crucial times and they made some
big threes that really hurts us,² she added. ³It¹s only going to make us
better playing good teams like this.²
Kristen McKeel anchored the Massena effort with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Emily Sullivan finished with 10 points while Caitlin Miller, who grabbed a
team-high 12 boards, and Marissa Truax chipped in seven points apiece.
The Cougars, who defeated Franklin Academy earlier this month, improved to
6-0 overall with the win. Rachelle Barcomb scored 22 points and Katrina
Garrand chipped in with 16 to lead the host Cougars.

 BOYS BASKETBALL:

Like so many matchups before Tuesday¹s Heuvelton vs Lisbon NAC
West game in the first round of the Al Gutterson Memorial Tournament; it
came down to one possession.
Even when such a dramatic possession seemed unlikely early in the game.
Lisbon opened a 24-10 lead in the second quarter but found itself needing
two tough inside conversions by Eric Mehaffy to pull itself into a 44-44 tie
with 34.3 seconds to play in the fourth quarter.
Heuvelton took possession and got into its halfcourt offense but with less
than a second remaining on the shot clock, nothing was happening.
So like he did in a similar scenario in a recent overtime victory over
Edwards-Knox, junior guard Trevor Brothers made something happen. He buried
a jump shot from top of the key to give the Bulldogs a 46-44 lead with 5.1
seconds to play.
The Bulldogs then sealed the deal with tough man-to-man defense with a small
lineup forcing the Knights to take their final shot as a hurried attempt
from just inside halfcourt. HCS will look to follow up the emotional win
tonight in the title game against Tupper Lake which downed Hammond 60-31 on
Tuesday.
³I knew this team had the potential to play like this and we showed tonight
that we could come back from adversity,² said HCS Coach Josh McAllister
after the  5-2 Bulldogs handed the 5-3 Knights their second straight
heart-wrenching loss in an intense, physical duel which left both teams at
3-2 in NAC West play.
³We were very close to getting blown out in the second quarter but we went
straight man-to-man and got some momentum going. Andrew Ross hit some big
jump shots down the stretch and Trevor Brothers hit his second game-winner
of the season. I told him he has ice-water in his veins. He also hit some
game-winners as a JV player.²
Sparked at both ends of the court by the aggressive play of forward Zach
Limoges, who scored a game-high 14 points, the Bulldogs scored the last
eight points of the half as a prelude for post intermission dramatics.
Brothers¹ only points of the night followed a big play relay which started
after smooth sophomore Kyle Binion scored three straight points to give
Lisbon a 33-28 lead. Ross, who scored all 12 of his points in the second
half, sandwiched a three around a long two by Alan Ashley to give HCS a
40-37 lead with 4:27 to play and Dave Putman, who scored eight of his 12
points in the second half, hit a jumper to post a 42-37 lead with 3:12 to
play.
Mehaffy, who led Lisbon with 12 points, started an late  rally with two free
throws and climaxed with four points to tie the score at 44-44. Scott
Lawton, who grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds, and Ryan Akins, who passed out
three assists, each scored seven points for Lisbon and Josh Crawford added
six.

TL 61 - Hammond 30

 Forward Jacob Klossner  showed his range of
game-breaking abilities by blocking two shots and hitting a three-pointer
and two gliding drives to the basket, scoring the first seven points of the
third quarter. The Lumberjacks went on to dominate the second half 40-18.
"We got in early foul trouble so I took Jacob Klossner and Hayden LaMere out
and saved them for the second half. Jacob really came on and we played very
well," said Tupper Lake Coach Steve Skiff.
Klossner finished with 12 points while Hayden LaMere netted three of TL's
eight three-pointers scoring 12 points. Nick O'Neil showed an excellent
inside-outside game scoring 15 points for the winners.
Griff Stark-Ennis  showed his extreme athleticism scoring 16 of his
game-high 18 points in the second half for the Red Devils who held a
two-point lead until the Lumberjacks scored the last 10 points of the first
half.
"With two starters out we just couldn't keep up with them," said Hammond
Coach Don Gordon. ³Griff Stark-Ennis had a very strong game but Tupper Lake
was just two strong."

They came through one year later than expected, but Hermon-DeKalb
boys basketball players came through in a big way in Tuesday night¹s
championship game of the 31st Annual Burkman Classic.
H-D pulled away from an early 11-10 lead, sparked by a suffocating
full-court press, to prevail 66-29 over host Canton, winning their first
Burkman title since 2002.
³We felt we had a pretty good team here last year, but we fell short. So
it¹s nice to get this win tonight,² said H-D coach Clay Denesha.
³What I Iiked tonight was our team defense. When I took the starters out
with six minutes to play, we had only given up four points in the second
half.²
H-D (6-1) was led offensively by Tournament MVP Jon Peters who tallied six
rebounds and three points to follow up a 23-point effort versus E-K in the
semifinals.
All Tournament Team selection Dylan Amo scored a game-high 18 points versus
the Bears to go with five rebounds and five assists, Brandon Rust scored 10
points, Connor Whitton tallied six points, six assists and six steals, All
Tournament Team selection Chris Wentzel contributed six rebounds and four
points while Logan Brabaw scored seven points for the winners.
³Dylan and Jon are the two big guys we look to offensively and they did a
good job for us,² said coach Denesha.
For Canton (2-5), Keagan McGovern scored seven points, Tanner Pratt and
Aaron Rexford each hit three pointers while All Tournament Team selection
Ben Koser scored two points.
³Hermon-DeKalb is a team which puts together some pretty good ofensive
spurts and once they started that tonight, it snowballed,² said Canton coach
Henry LaQuier.
³Ben Koser did a good job for us in attacking the basket both nights of the
tournament.²

E-K 66, C-P 29

 In the consolation game, All Tournament Team selection David
Bullock scored a game-high 23 points to lead Edwards-Knox past
Colton-Pierrepont.
Jon Davison scored nine points while Taylor Davis and Nate Moorehouse each
added eight for the Cougars (2-4). For the Colts, All Tournament Team
selection Mike Reilly hit two three-pointers in scoring 13 points followed
by Gavin Dominy with nine points and Beau Boyden with four.

 St. Regis Falls endured early foul trouble when center Billy
LaBounty picked up his third foul early in the second quarter in their
meeting with Morristown at the Morristown Rockets Booster Club Holiday Boys
Basketball Tournament.
But the Saints didn¹t quit earning a 47-40 victory over the Rockets to set
up the stage to go 2-0 in the Morristown Tournament when they face
Alexandria Bay today at 3 p.m.
Morristown faces Parishville-Hopkinton at 7 p.m. in the nightcap.
³Billy makes a big difference for us. He makes teams play him and that opens
up things. He had three early fouls and got a fourth later, but as a team we
kept our composure and we never quit. We could have folded and that didn¹t
happen,² said SRF Coach Justin Todd.
Down 14-4 in the first quarter, the Saints battled back to cut the deficit
to 24-20 at halftime.
The Saints eventually cut the deficit to 34-32 at the end of three and
scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter to a 40-34 lead.
Morristown went on a four point spurt making it 40-38 on two free throws by
Josh Youngs, but Steve Brown sealed the win with a pair of free throws with
1:29 to play.
Nick Nugent scored inside with 1:17 left but missed a chance to cut the
deficit to one with a free throw for Morristown. After both teams turned the
ball over, the Saints went five of six from the charity strip down the
stretch including a pair from Taylor Artus and LaBounty for a 47-40 win.
LaBounty scored five fourth quarter points in a 13 point effort to go with
six rebounds. Artus finished with eight boards and eight points while Steve
Brown scored six points and posted six rebounds. Ryan Susice hit a pair of
three¹s in an eight point effort for the winners.
Jeff King scored 10 points for MCS. Connor Learn added nine and Drew
Lipinsky and Nick Nugent finished with seven and six respectively.
³We didn¹t finish when we had the chance to and St. Regis Falls really
played well in the second half,² said MCS Coach Mike Roberts.
In the junior varsity game, Morristown sailed past St. Regis Falls 59-26.
Bob Simmons fired in six three pointers enroute to a 21 point performance
for the Rockets. Brandon  Aldrich added seven while Geoff Baldwin and Kellas
Lowery each scored six.  Caleb Green scored seven points for SRF. Brady Shanti and Tim Wheeler each
logged in four.

 Madrid-Waddington 66, Alex Bay 43

The Jackets broke open an 11-10 first
quarter lead with a 21-10 run in the second quarter keyed by six points from
Tournament All Star Jordan Kendall and five points from BJ Bernard.
Kendall paced the well balanced effort scoring 18 points to go with four
assists, three rebounds and two steals. Colin O'Bryan, another All Star
selection, tallied 10 points to compliment his six assists, four rebounds
and three steals. Quinn Shoen finished with 10 points and nine rebounds
while Justin Pierce grabbed eight boards and collected nine points. Bernard
finished with four assists, three steals and five points and Alex Brock
added four points and four rebounds.
Vinnie Hoover scored 12 points for Alex Bay. Zach Hayes added seven while
Brett Hanson chipped in six.

BOYS HS HOCKEY:

Tied at 1-1 heading to the third period, the St. Lawrence Central
boys hockey team dropped a 5-2 decision to Plattsburgh on Tuesday night in
the opening round of the Alex Bay Tournament.
Plattsburgh¹s Brendan Cortwright and SLC¹s Kyle Strader traded first-period
goals, Strader¹s coming from Charlie Dullea and Brett Mahoney.
In the third period, Zack Clodgo and CJ. Worley scored consecutive goals for
Plattsburgh before SLC¹s Dylan Patterson answered from Andrew Fiske at 9:39.
But the Hornets closed it out with goals by Joe Tolosky and Worley.
Brandon Bechard made 24 saves for the Hornets while Jordan Gary made 21
stops for the Larries.
