SARA ARTUS OF ST. REGIS FALLS WINS AWARDS...

POTSDAM –Clarkson University volleyball team member Sara Artus of St. Regis Falls has been picked by the American Volleyball Coaches Association as an Honorable Mention All-American and First-Team All-Region (NYS) player.

Artus became the first player in the history of Clarkson’s volleyball program to receive All-American status. A First-Team All-Liberty League performer, sophomore Artus led the conference in kills (506) and kills per set (4.25), which ranked in the top 20 nationally.

She also ranked sixth in the league in hitting percentage at .226. She also was among the team leaders in aces (33), blocks (35) and digs (268).

The Golden Knights made their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in program history in 2009, and finished the season with their best winning percentage (.800, with a record of 28-7) in school history.

FORT DRUM — They attend different schools, hail from across the country and have lived all over the world. But the kids assembled under bright lights on a grassy field Wednesday night shared two things that have brought them together: a parent in the Army and a love for football.

The Fort Drum Mountaineers Pee Wee football team is heading Saturday to Jackson, N.J., to compete in the Pop Warner Eastern Region Championship game, after winning the Greater Watertown Pop Warner Super Bowl earlier this month and defeating the Chittenango Bears on Sunday in Syracuse.

At Wednesday night's practice — the team's last before the championship — head coach John C. McAlister said military kids are used to moving and meeting new people, a quality that likely helped the 26 nine- to 12-year-olds cohere quickly and work together as a team.
