CANTON BLUE STAR MEMORIAL/FLAG POLE DEDICATED ON VETERANS' DAY--Turnout for the ceremony was high yesterday. The memorial in front of the Canton Municipal Building is a cooperative effort between VFW Post 1231 and the Canton Garden Club. The Blue Star tradition began during World War I as a symbol for families who have a loved one in the service; garden clubs adopted it nationwide after the Second World War as a symbol of support for all who have served in all times. The memorial at the Municipal Building is an encased plaque and adjacent flagpole.
GOUVERNEUR MAN CHARGED WITH RAPE--State Police say 22-year-old Mitchell Sprouse allegedly had relations with a 15-year-old girl. He was charged with Third Degree Rape, a felony; and a count of Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Sprouse was arraigned and released to probation supervision.
FORT COVINGTON WOMAN CHARGED WITH RUSSIAN MAFIA DRUG CARTEL--Kimberly Cook was arrested earlier this week on Federal charges alleging she was part of a large-scale distribution ring that moved massive amounts of marijuana to the Cleveland, Ohio area to a network tied with organized crime. 31-year-old Daniel Simonds of Stockholm, murdered in 2007 was also allegedly part of the group. Cook was slated to be arraigned before a Federal Magistrate in Plattsburgh Tuesday; no further details were available.
