LEGISLATORS ASKED TO KEEP HOMELESS PREVENTION PROGRAM--St.Lawrence County Legislators in Services Committee received a request from Points North Housing Agency to continue participation in a stimulus-funded rental housing program. Nearly 2-million-dollars was awarded to a consortium of three counties and Points North to assist needy persons with back rent, current rent in some cases, landlord-tenant mediation, utility payments, storage and other issues. The Board was asked to consider keeping the program when the stimulus payment runs out. Legislators were concerned they might make a financial commitment they cannot fulfill if economic conditions get worse.

SHOOTING VICTIM 'CRITICAL'--38-year-old Bernard Sharlow of Potsdam, who received a 50-caliber slug in the abdomen in a hunting accident off Dayton Road and County Route 35 Thursday morning, remains critical today at Fletcher-Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vermont. 43-year-old Ricky Brunelle of Ellenburg Depot, a corrections officer renting the land where the accident occurred, was charged with Felony Assault in the Second Degree, arraigned and released to probation supervision at the suggestion of prosecutors.

LOCAL SCHOOL SEES WIDESPREAD SICKNESS--Massena Leary Junior High had a large percentage of students out the past couple of days with a flu-like illness. Several teachers were also out, but those slots were filled with substitutes. The Courier-Observer says there are no plans to close school at this this time. RELATED TO THE FLU, the state vaccination requirement for healthcare workers has been suspended, citing a lack of adequate vaccine supplies.

LOCAL CATHOLIC PARISH TO TAKE DOOR-TO-DOOR CENSUS--St.Mary's in Potsdam will canvass the Village November 9th to enumerate parish families and find Catholics who may not be participating in the Church. A separate canvass will be held outside the Village in the Spring.
