POTSDAM SPORTS LEGEND JACK PHILLIPS DIES--Phillips, a retired major league baseball player and physical education instructor-coach at Clarkson University passed away Sunday, a few days shy of 88. Phillips was first baseman on the 1947 World Series-winning New York Yankees, and played 10 years in the major leagues. Phillips was also well-known locally for his volunteerism with organizing and coaching youth sports events.

AUGUST WARMER, DRIER THAN NORMAL--Potsdam certified military weather observer Rick O'Hanlon recorded an average temperature for the month of 67.4 degrees, a degree above normal; and a total rainfall of 3.02 inches, over an inch below normal.

HOFFMAN CELEBRATES 'COST OF GOVERNMENT DAY'--Douglas Hoffman, the Conservative party candidate for the 23rd Congressional District seat, said in a series of press conferences yesterday that today, September 1st is the day the average taxpayer works for himself, instead of for the government. The campaign of GOP candidate DeDe Scozzafava says the Hoffman statement yesterday was his 'latest angry rant'.

RUSSELL: GUBERNATORIAL VETO OF WAR OF 1812 COMMISSION BILL 'DISAPPOINTING'--Governor Paterson recently shot down legislation that would have formed the commission in New York to organize the bicentennial observances surrounding the war. Fort LaPresentation in Ogdensburg is directly linked to the war. 118th Assembly District representative Addie Russell, the sponsor of the bill in her chamber says even though she has time to possibly reverse the decision before the bicentennial, the veto sets up a major delay in the planning process.
