CANTON-POTSDAM HOSPITAL TO SEE NET GAIN OF 62 PARKING SPACES--The Potsdam Village Planning Board voted Thursday to approve the use of property on Leroy and Cottage Streets for adding parking spaces. Architect Brooks Washburn told planners Thursday the parking will be for staff only, to relieve congestion on Leroy Street.
ST.LAWRENCE COUNTY JOBLESS RATE 9.9% FOR JULY--The State Labor Department data shows the county to have ther highest jobless rate in the state outside of New York City. However, the rate is down by four-tenths of a point.
SUNY POTSDAM ON US NEWS POLL FOR 11TH STRAIGHT YEAR--The college is in the top tier of colleges in the Northern US in the category "University-Master's". Classes start for the fall semester August 31st.
GRIFFO:FAILURE TO COLLECT SMOKE TAX 'ILL-ADVISED'--State Senator Joe Griffo told 99 News yesterday the move by the Paterton administration to back off on collecting taxes on tobacco sold by Native Americans to non-natives, despite a law that demands it, is a tax issue, not about sovereignty or any other issue.
SUNY CANTON PILOTS TEXTBOOK-RENTING PROGRAM--Eight courses at the college are participating in a program that will save students close to half the cost of a book. The College Association will own the book; the student has the option to buy it at the end of the course.
NORWOOD VILLAGE SAVES BIG BUCKS WITH STIMULUS BOOST--The Village was recently informed it will receive just under 2.4 million dollars to pay down the debt on its recent sewer project. The loan is 3-and-three-quarters percent lower in interest than the original financing for the project.
