INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION AND STUDENTS PRIORITY FOR SUNY, CHANCELLOR SAYS--Dr.Nancy Zimpher told reporters on the Canton campus Monday increasing the amount of student exchanges, sharing information with universities around the world, and bringing in more international students to campuses will be a major long-term focus. Zimpher says it is necessary to stay competitive, as the competition is now global.
RUSSELL NOT RUNNING FOR CONGRESS--118th Assembly District representative Addie Russell said in a press release yesterday she sumbitted her name for consideration as the Democratic nominee for the 23rd Congressional District , but has decided to withdraw because of the upcoming birth of her second child, and to continue serving the constituents of the River District.
LOCAL CONTRACTORS AWARDED BIDS FOR NYPA PROJECT--The Power Authority has approved 3.2 million dollars for Perras Excavating of Massena, and another million for Bernier-Carr Group of Watertown to build a new dike to control two wildlife ponds, and a pumphouse at the Wilson Hill Wildlife Management Area.
CANTON LEGISLATOR, OTHERS FEAR LAWSUIT OVER J&L CLEANUP--Peter Fitzrandolph said Monday in a session about the long-dormant, contaminated former industrial property in Benson Mines he feels whatever opinion attorneys have as to the liability of the County for cleanup if it takes the property over, 'there will be some very unhappy people' if the county gets sued. Developers feel the county is free of liability becase it has cooperated with the State DEC.
