FAMINE-CAUSING FUNGUS DISCOVERED IN ST.LAWRENCE COUNTY--"Late Blight"--the disease that caused the Irish Potato Famines centuries ago was detected recently in the Canton area. Seeve Vandemark, a senior specialist based at Cornell Cooperative Extension in Canton told 99 News yesterday the blight has also been discovered in Jefferson, Franklin, and several other counties in the state. It was transported here in potato and tomato shipments from the southern US. The blight can wipe out an acre of produce in seven days.

BREAKTHROUGH ON THE BRIDGE--Mohawks are now allowing traffic to go to Massena, but not back and forth, in response to progressing talks with the Canadian government over the arming of border guards.

FIRE DESTROYS RESIDENCE IN FOWLER--Trucks rolled to the home of Hazel Mashaw on County Route 24 about 3 this morning. One person siffered from smoke inhalation. No cause has yet been found; the loss was insured.

'COMMUNITY HEROES' TO BE HONORED IN POTSDAM PARADE SATURDAY--The parade honoring police, fire, EMS, the military and other first responders will be the peak event of Potsdam Summerfest. The parade steps off from Old Snell at 5:30pm. The event will be followed by the annual Potsdam Fire Department "Run To The River".

BIG STIMULUS BUCKS FOR POTSDAM ANIMAL SHELTER PROJECT, OTHERS--3.6 million dollars from the USDA is headed to five different projects in St.Lawrence County. Over half a million dollars will be headed to the Humane Society for its renovation and expansion. 1.4 million dollars for the Town of Parishville will fund a new highway garage, Hermon firefighters have been awarded 902-thousand. Norwood Fire will get a new pumper with the help of 260K, and Nicholville Fire will see 65-thou.

SMOKE HAD SMOKE, JAILED--The Malone Telegram says federal agents with a search warrant raided the home of 32-year-old Dawn Smoke on St.Regis Road, Akwesasne. 10 pounds of high-grade marijuana with an estimated street value of about 50-thousand dollars was seized. Smoke was arraigned and jailed on 100-thousand dollars cash bail or 200-thousand dollars bail bond.
