ACID RAIN AND MERCURY STUDY INCLUSION IN FEDERAL CLIMATE CHANGE LEGISLATION TERMED 'MAJOR VICTORY'--Environmentalists are hailing the approval by the House of Representatives an amendment to the long-sought bill package that will gauge the impact of coal-fired power plants in the midwest on the Adirondacks. Local Congressman John Mc.Hugh sought the inclusion of acid rain in related bills for many years.

MOHAWKS GO TO COURT OVER BRIDGE CLOSURE--The Plattsburgh Press-Republican says The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne is pursuing litigation against Canadian government officials looking to determine the legality of the closure of the Cornwall-Massena International Bridge. The hope is to get a court order to reopen the span, and to get talks moving on postponing the arming of Canadian Customs agents. The bridge has been closed since June 1st.

TWO MORE HACKETT'S STORES TO CLOSE--The store in St.Lawrence Centre in Massena closed Thursday, with its inventory to moved to the Gouverneur location for liquidation. Gouverneur will close later this summer. The closures come as the chain struggles financially.
