MOHAWKS TO MOUNT PROTEST OVER ARMED BORDER GUARDS--Natives from both sides of the US-Canadian Border will be marching Saturday across the International Bridge from Cornwall to Massena, in protest over the move by the Canadian government to start giving its border guards guns starting in June. The governmental entities on both sides, both traditional and government-recognized issued a statement recently arming the guards risks escalating an already-volatile situation.
STIMULUS DOLLARS TO HIGHER ED WILL BE FOR JOBS, STATE LEADER SAYS--Assembly Higher Education Committee Chair Deborah Glick told reporters Thursday in a press conference at the office of Assemblymember Addir Russell that Pell Grants and competitive grants for initiatives are good and necessary from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, but the real focus in New York will be workforce investment dollars in collaboration with colleges for training in health and high-tech jobs.
FRANKLIN COUNTY JAIL GUARD ARRESTED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF INMATE--36-year-old Ronald Martin of St. Regis Falls allegedly had contact with a female inmate April 10th. He was charged with Second Degree Sexual Abuse and Official Misconduct, and released on tickets to appar in Town of Malone Court.
TAINTED DRINKS AT POTSDAM GREEK HOUSE UNDER INVESTIGATION--Potsdam Police say 5 attendees at a party on Bay St. April 24th and 25th were served beverages tainted with drugs. All 5 were sick the next day; one was treated at Canton-Potsdam Hospital. Police have yet to find out what the drug is, and anyone with information is asked to call 265-2121 immediately.
JAIL INMATES TRANSFERED TO NEW FACILITY--St. Lawrence County Sheriff Kevin Wells reported yesterday the transfer of about 70 inmates to the new Correctional Facility off Commerce Lane in Canton was finished about 7:30 last night. The old jail on Judson Street can no longer be used to hold inmates without State authorization.
