FIRE DANGER HIGH, BUT NO BURN BAN, YET--The State DEC is urging against open burning and care with smoking materials, vehicle exhaust pipes and other fire-starters. The current warmth and low humidity makes the risk of rapidly-spreading grass and brush fires high. No open burning ban has been issued outright as of this report, however.
GOUVERNEUR MAN PERISHES IN ROLLOVER CRASH--Jefferson County Sheriff's Deputies report 37-year-old Gary Blackburn received fatal injuries when the car he was driving north on County Route 26 left the pavement, struck an embankment and rolled several times. Blackburn was pronounced dead at EJ Noble Hospital in Gouverneur.
SUNY CANTON STEEL BRIDGE TEAM WINS IN REGIONAL COMPETITION--The team coached by instructor Paul Hitchman recently took first place honors, the 13th time in 15 years. The team is now raising funds to travel to national competition in Las Vegas May 22nd.
