99 NEWS HEADLINES FOR FRIDAY, 3/20/09...FIRST BURN BAN OF THE SEASON IS ON, AS OF THURSDAY NIGHT UNTIL 7PM TUESDAY

11 COUNTS, INCLUDING FELONY DWI FROM HIGH-SPEED CHASE--State Police say 35-year-old Kevin Mattot of Governeur allegedly took them up to 95 miles an hour on Route 310 last night. He allegedly refused to take a chemical test. Mattot was arraigned and jailed on 2-thousand dollars cash bail or 3-thousand dollars bail bond.

 

SUNY POTSDAM UNVEILS UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH CENTER--The new center in MacVicar Hall is a clearing-house for students and professors looking to collaborate in hands-on projects. Director Dr. Bethany Usher says students that are engaged in collaborative projects tend to stay in college and perform better academically.

 

BEVINS RESIGNS--37-year-old Paul Bevins of Potsdam, the Canton Central English teacher accused of providing alcohol to an 18-year-old boy twice, reportedly resigned from his position effective at the end of the school year. A long-term substitute has been hired. Bevins was suspended after allegations of inappropriate texting surfaced. Bevins faces criminal charges of Unlawfully Dealing with a Child in both Canton and Potsdam, where the alleged incidents occurred.

BURNS BOUND FOR BOCES BOSS JOB--Parishville-Hopkinton School Superintendent Tom Burns has been hired to take the top spot at St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES, effective June 1st taking over from Interim Superintendent Jay Boak. Boak took over when Dr. Linda Gush retired. The Courier-Observer says Burns will start at a salary of 142-thousand dollars a year.

NORWOOD KIWANIS SEEKS HOUSE-BUILDING PROJECT PROPOSALS--Club House Chair Phyllis Mc.Faddin says the project is an ideal opportunity for Seaway Tech BOCES students to gain practical experience. the ideal project would be about 15-hundred square feet with a simple roof-line. Questions may be directed to Mc.Faddin at 353-2834.
