POTSDAM TRUSTEES' MAJORITY SUPPORTS CANTON-POTSDAM HOSPITAL ZONING CHANGE--The Board heard from hospital CEO David Acker Monday with a formal presentation asking for the hospital and surrounding properties to be rezoned specifically for health care, so the hospital can build and expand with less red tape.
CANTON MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO CHILD PORN COUNTS--Brent Easton, age 42 of Canton pled guilty in Federal Court last week to possessing child pornography, admitting he had still photos and videos, and also uploaded the porn onto the internet to be shared by others. Easton faces 5-20 years in prison and a fine up to a quarter-million dollars.
NATIVE SMOKE TAX BILL SIGNED INTO LAW--Governor David Paterson signed the bill into law Monday, collecting tax from tobacco sold to non-natives. Darrel Aubertine, local State Senator who voted for the bill, says he believes the matter will go into litigation and be resolved, hopefully before violence erupts. Natives feel the taxation violates their sovereignty.
