99 NEWS HEADLINES FOR MONDAY, 12/8/08

GILLETTE-SAUNDERS COMPLEX DEDICATED--The physical education facilities at Potsdam Central School were dedicated Saturday in a ceremony honoring longtime teachers, coaches and athletic directors Hal Gillette and Louise Saunders. Alumni and friends raised nearly 10-thousand dollars for plaques unveiled Saturday that will be installed in the newly-renovated physical edication area.

HOLIDAY TREE-LIGHTING IN POTSDAM--The Village held its annual ceremony Saturday at the tree next to the fire station at the Civic Center. Museum director Mimi VanDeusen told the small gathering the Village has held tree-lighting ceremonies for at least 40 years, for much of that time coinciding with ceremonies and a choral festival on the grounds of Snell Hall across the street.

CORNING, GM TO SEE HOLIDAY SHUTDOWNS--Both plants have announced extended layoffs as the result of declining demand for their products. Many at the GM plant il Massena will not go back to work, as they accepted severances that go into effect at the end of the year. Corning is hoping to bring back workers early next year.

LOCAL MAN CHARGED IN OSWEGO AREA TREE-CHOPPING BUST--36-year-old Michael Humberstone of Rensselaer Falls is one of three men arrested recently for allegedly cutting down valuable cherry trees in the Altmar State Forest. Humberstone was arraigned and sent back to Broome County Jail where he is held on unrelated Federal charges. The tree-cutting incident brings felony counts of grand larceny, criminal mischief, and stolem property possession. The other two men arrested are from the Oswego area.
